How cheap could you have picked up a decent CE in the 1970's?

Real cheap, I'd bet...

Worth every penny! (totally biased opinion <lol>)..
Strange thing...
Got a call from a non-Stude guy last night who was 'interested' in this CE.
Wanted it for his 'weekend home' so he could tool around with the grandkids and go to parades and such.
Sent an e-mail to the seller offering a lower price, thinking all cars on Ebay are always priced too high.
Nice enough guy, but I told him that this CE would probably sell for that much money, even if sold elsewhere off Ebay.
I asked him how tall he was, and how big he was.
People either forget, or forget to consider how small the CE cabin really is.
The 'outside' interest is definitely there.
I hope 'cheap' and CE never cross paths <g>...

I found out about the big part! Brought my '39 home and it sat for awhile then I went into tear down mode(bagging every part, marking each bag, taking multiple pics of every  operation) It was during this part that I actually sat in the seat facing the dash. The truck became garage art at that point. Soon as I lose enough weight I'll put it back together.No...it isnt for sale;)

Afew years ago it may have brought close to the money, but not now.
Our country is in a deep recession and even the weathy people I know
have cut back.  I would say if you are trying to sell a collector car
now and got a decent offer to take it and run!!!  We are approaching a
much more serious down trun that we have seen so far and it is going
to get very ugly long before it gets better!!!

Huh?
Stupid money knows no economic timeframe. (One look at Barrett-Jackson will
tell you that)
I get a kick out of all the people that believe all the doom and gloom
spewed at them.
And now, in an election year, it will get even worse.
Preparation for a 'normal' economic cycle is not a reason to 'cut and run'
from a 'hobby'.
The only thing disconcerting is the external manipulation of the normal
economic cycle.
When times are real good, then the prudent save for when the times are bad.
Some consider this effort to put away funds in savings as a harbinger of
economic doom.
I disagree. I am optimistic about my future. Not everyone else's.. Just
mine.
I am doing everything I can to save, and prepare for a decent economic
future....for me and my family.
Saving money is not a certain indicator of recession.
It is a prudent thing to do any time, but more so just past peak on an
economic cycle.
But, those that continue on their debt incurring ways will have to face the
piper...sooner or later.
I hope this CE goes for more than that. I really do.
It will help me convince myself that the money I threw into my project was
not wasted.
Personally, I think the smart money will be waiting...
Waiting out there to snap up the deals out there offered up by those that
either panic, of find themselves between a rock and a hard place
financially.
Serious downturn?
You betcha... We have allowed our elected officials to spend us into a hole.
Now we are enslaved to their programs.
How best to prepare for this event?
Vote 'em out.
Vote for the Flat Tax.
Uh oh... Sliding inexorably toward that inevitable off topic political
side...
I'll quit now...

There was a drop last year at Barrett Jackson and there will be again
this year Jeff.  All I am saying is that collector car values are
lower from this time last year due to the economy and the economy will
get a lot worse before it gets better.  Abandon the hobby?  Who said
anything about that?

Do you think it is a normal adjustment in the cycle, but adjusted for
inflation?
Just thinking out loud.

It is a combination of factors all leading back to the housing market
that all stem to greed.

First results for Studebakers at Barrett Jackson 2008 are in

(all stock cars)

48 M5 Pickup $34,000
87 Avanti $30,000
31 President 4 seasons $110,000
61 Champ T cab $24,000

Not all that soft in my opinion.

More news on the "soft market":

" From the RM Auctions sale at the Arizona Biltmore, the 58 Packard
Hawk was hammered sold at $67,500 plus fees."

Yes, over $74K with fees. Not a bad retturn on a 30K investment  3 years
ago, considering what some of my investments have done.

I think that the whole economy is going to take a dump to the extent
that most of us will have never experienced.

Too many negative factors in the mix.

Well, there is a 62 GT on ebay needing a interior that has a 16K bid
which is way over normal market value, but the 20K plus job is still
bidless. I have seen no softness in prices yet. As I said, I'd expect to
find lower  prices for me to pay, but so far, they are higher then ever.

Evidently there are a lot of sellers that think there cars are worth
way more than the value John.  I see this all the time on the EBAY
listings.

Yes, but my point was that the 16K overpriced Hawk had a bid in this
economy.

The only trend I've noticed is I have not been able to buy a bargain
Studebaker in 3 months. They all seem to be priced way above what I feel
is retail. i.e, a 16K GT Hawk that needs work, decent ones over 20K on
ebay. The CE is worth the money, but his high starting bid might kill
his auction.

How cheap could you have picked up a decent CE in the 1970's?

There was a complete, relatively rust-free CE in a wrecking yard in Hayward,
CA in about 1970.  They wanted what I thought was a ridiculous $400 for it.
Ridiculous because a Sequoia Chapter member had bought one from an almond
farm and drove it home for less than that.  In the later mid-'70s a '38 was
advertised in San Diego for $1600.
