In a May 8 letter to the editor commenting on "Hook-Up or Shut Up," a review of the book "Sex and The Soul," Wall Street Journal reader Dorothy Moore of Queens NY writes: "...but does he really want to take the stance that students had less sex back then? Or, more believably, is it simply that academicians at that time weren't writing about the 'goings-on' in the back seats of 1939 Studebakers, and they weren't using casual, conversational terms to describe them?" I have no brief (woohoo) on this issue. But Ms. Moore, who clearly knows her way around a 1939 Studebaker, has struck a blow for The Old Brand and deserves our thanks and respect. Anybody in the neighborhood care to call her up and, um, offer her a ride? Sorry, but my '39 Studebaker doesn't have a back seat... The width and length are perfect. The only problem is height. It will easliy accommodate one person lying flat but "stacking" is not possible. I have considerable experience esp. during the years 1962-67. I had a '41 commander in High School ( in the late 70's). While I regret not keeping the aftermarket "car bed" ( different front seat back that would remove and have legs so it could be spanned between from and back seats), I can confirm that the conventional back seat had adequate space for more than one person - more easily "stacked" than side by side. > I can tell you that a single bed mattress will fit beautifully into > the trunk of the 1939-41 Champions. I had my '68 LTD rigged so the back of the fr seat would recline down and meet the lower rear seat to make the whole interior into a bed.
