RBK. - 04 Aug 2008 02:54 GMT Anyone has any Saginaw power steering setups for sale? I am looking for a manual shift ,power steering setup for a 1953-1955 sedan or wagon. If any one has the shift lever from the bottom of the column on the Saginaw power steering setup , the one without the grease fitting ,I would be willing to trade rare stuff for. I have many power steering parts for sale and will buy any extra Saginaw power steering parts or incomplete set ups. I am still buying more inventories and just bought out a former Stude truck dealer inventory.lots of truck stuff. 1950-56 Studebaker Automatic parts etc. Not much chrome or accesories but try! 22.000 parts inventoried on the computer.38.000 Sq. ft of floor space full of Studebaker parts.

RBK. - 04 Aug 2008 18:09 GMT > Bob > Are you going to have a parts list for your truck parts? These truck parts are being inventoried into my regular inventory of 22.000 part numbers. I have a website with 1937-40 parts and I may add pictures of the parts there. I am looking for an ignition lock assembly (Delco) for a Canadian built 1936 Dictator. I have quite a few parts for Coupe Expreses but I need part numbers. Look at my website and you may recognise the items you need. Check back once in awhile to check for new items. Richard Quinn made up a listing for parts that are different from the sedans for the coupe express. The other part numbers can be found in the regular parts books that are readily available. If you need this listing contact him at Rtq11@aol.com. He has an amazing collection of Studebaker literature.

Jerry Kaiser - 05 Aug 2008 03:11 GMT Thanks Bob
It will be awhile before I start on the Coupe Express. I haven't completely finished the 37 President yet and next in line is the 54 Conestoga. Then the 38 CE

I have an extra setup from a '55 C-K, the box leaks though. Pump is good, I swapped pumps because I detailed the one that I bought while the original was doing its thing on the car. I do not know how much interchanges with a sedan though; I suspect that other than the box and pump not much. I was hoping to send it off to have it rebuilt to swap into my '55 if I can't come up with a Saginaw manual box, but I haven't been able to justify the $$$ yet. Let me know if you're interested; the sucker is HEAVY though, I imagine shipping would be quite expensive.

I also have an "extra" Saginaw power steering box and pump mount but little else.
BTW, a manual box for Champions should be a Saginaw for '53-55. Same for 1956 maybe except that the steering wheel spline may be different. The spline definitely changed in 1957.

Actually I have everything I need to make it work except for the steering shaft/worm gear. I bought a complete box and column including the pitman arm, reach rod, and bellcrank at a swap meet a while back but when I knocked the steering wheel off the top of the steering shaft was messed up and I don't like welding on steering shafts. I think 53-56 will all work.

They are crap. The original still resides in the Power Hawk but it has had that "flat" spot on the worm almost ever since I bought the car in 1966 with only 33K on the clock. It now is in the low 90K range and all it needs is some ambition on my part to install the Saginaw box (assuming that it's the right one) that I got from Heiple years ago.

I know, JDP doesn't agree with what I'm doing, but I want to try it... I like the concept of lighter weight on the front end and less stuff to get in the way/break; I figure with the slow ratio and 17" wheel it shouldn't be *too* hard to drive without power steering. I didn't miss it on my '62 Daytona.
On the flip side, the Saginaw P/S setup that I have in the car now is working flawlessly and only needs a new Pitman shaft seal to be perfect...

With it a smaller diameter wheel is permissible. The c/k's have a serious clearance problem, (wheel clearance to your lap) since the shaft is more horizontal than sedans due to the set back of the c/k cabin.
Jeff Rice might still have some info how to seal the ram shaft on the Saginaw or you could just go to using c/v joint grease that works great.

I can always swap back if it doesn't work out. I figure I'm putting this car together for me; if I can drive it comfortably that's all that really matters. down the road if I sell it to someone and they don't like it, I can always throw the P/S stuff in the trunk (I do have two complete setups, so it's no skin off my nose etc. The "extra" was just so I could have one rebuilt if I never found a manual box. I have been looking, not seriously, but keeping an eye out for one ever since I got this car, and I have only seen the two that I've purchased.)

I don't have either on the PH but this car is to remain largely original. But there are times, I wish I had PS especially when I was running radials..

I am interested in any Saginaw power steering items you have. Are you in Fort Wayne? Did we discuss a power steering setup from a manual shift car at one time? When I go that way I may want to stop by and see what you have. The reason these Saginaw boxes leak is that the bushings wear and the shaft moves around and ruins the seal.So make sure you check the movement of the shaft before you replace the seal.

I'm in Falls Church, VA - I think you were looking for some shift rods to copy and unfortunately I wasn't able to come through with them due to a miscommunication between myself and the guy that I bought some parts from (I got everything I wanted from him *except* the shift rods, which I do not have. In fact if anyone *has* repro'd the T-85 shift rods for a C-K I'd be interested in buying a pair. I have everything I should need to put a T-85 in my car *except* for the trans itself, and the shift rods.)
I am certain that I have a working pump, box (possibly in need of rebuild) and frame bracket from a '55 C-K. Not sure what else I have floating around. I do have the stickshift column but I don't want to sell that.
thanks
