John Poulos - 21 Oct 2004 17:53 GMT i just got off the phone with Dennis and to say he was not thrilled with my speculation on the NG about him and his business would be a understatement. I now know he's working with almost no help, trying to get a Christmas flyer out, write a TW ad and continue to get orders out with all the pressures a small business faces. If he makes a mistake or two, it's because of the pressure he's working under, he's trying to drain the swamp while dealing the alligators. I'll also admit that I could help him more than I do when I place a order. I tend to call and say "I need a steering box for Ray, get it out for me will you" and nothing more. It's bad enough I don't give him a part number, he has to go through my tickets to find a address. The fact that my order got screwed up, was as much my fault as anyone's. I know Dennis has not been in his normal cheerful mood with the pressures he's under, and as I friend, I just made it worse. I hope we'll all cut him a little slack until he gets caught up, and a nice order would not hurt.

RMC61Coupe - 21 Oct 2004 18:45 GMT Gonna order today using the web site and part numbers. We have to keep our vendors going or we will have the worlds largest parking lot of Studebakers. My wife already feels that way about our house.

John Poulos - 21 Oct 2004 18:53 GMT Thanks, I feel like sh.t for picking on him without knowing the crap he's dealing with.

Bill Glass - 21 Oct 2004 20:39 GMT I just spent 4 days approx 13 hrs ea. doing up our Xmas ad for TW, I am sure there will be errors and I know how Dennis feels. In the four days I spent on the ad I could have turned out a number of orders that have been sitting here.
However, there only x amount of hours in a day and unless you have help with other stuff, something, or some things are shoved to the back of the pile.
As far as his needing, vs doing a catalog. Based on the amount of possible part number he might have, the job could take way too much effort than its worth.
For example, say he finds a part, he has two or three of them in stock. In the process of getting the catalog ready for the printer, what happens if those two or three pieces are sold.
You have determine a level of inventory on each item, less than X pieces, does not get printed or listed. What is the sense of printing a catalog if you don't have the parts.
I kid around and joke about having over 200 items in our inventory, just doing the ad, and then seeing what I did not list we are well over 300 different items, and eventually they will all show up on the website and in print
I do not envy Dennnis and the task at hand. http://bondobilly.com/#stuff TAKE A LOOK AT THE NEW SHIRTS.....THEY ARE NEAT
John Poulos - 21 Oct 2004 21:08 GMT Your point about Dennis doing a catalog is good one. Can you imagine even putting 10 percent of his inventory in a paper catalog ? Given enough time and money, the best he could do would be to list perhaps a few 1000 of his fast movers.

Arkiejazz - 21 Oct 2004 22:04 GMT it's just a thought.....but maybe worth pondering: I know of several church organizations that send teams of men around when any of their churches need to be replaced due to fire, tornado, other natural disasters......or they just need a new one. I wonder if some of us old birds could team up and go volunteer to help Dennis get organized and what ever else sweat labor might be beneficial to him?

TomNoller - 21 Oct 2004 23:19 GMT Thanks for the update, JP. I, too, feel badly about his situation and my impatience. I doubt he'd ever want to hear from me again since I opened this can.
John Poulos - 21 Oct 2004 23:41 GMT Don't beat yourself up, we all jumped in the thread, and I think Dennis knows we only chimed in because we were concerned about him.

keith kichefski - 22 Oct 2004 13:20 GMT At one time I heard, the purchase of the inventory was made with funds from the South Bend Teacher's Pension Fund. If I were a teacher, I would be more than a little worried. I am not aware of any teachers spending their summer months at SASCO to secure THEIR partnered future. I also recall the story of 'inventory shrinkage' when a pallet of superchargers and what not, turned up missing. This was when the inventory was shifted to the engineering building across the street, from the old place. So much for volunteering to help. Anyone that did is now suspect. I pity the people that put in all of their hard work, never asking for anything in return, to now carry the 'brand' of being a potential criminal. I suspect that When Geoff ran the Newman-Altman operation, it was considered to be a 'salvage operation' much like the old-time scrap man had, with his horse and wagon. You buy by the pound and sell high. Anyone taught the business in that fashion, would have a hard time transitioning to a retail operation. The only ones I know that have made it work, sent their kids to the best business school they could afford.
Know exactly what you have to sell. Know where your product is located at all times. Advertise smartly. When setting prices, know what the market will bear. Protect your inventory from loss and decay. Market it effectively. Ship promptly with accuracy. Always give more than you promise. Even if it is only a smile, or a thank-you. Show a sincere interest in your customer's endevor. Find out what their next project is and offer suggestions.

John Poulos - 22 Oct 2004 13:48 GMT Before we build up the story, it was not a 'pallet of superchargers'<g>, it was one blower and some odds and ends, but your point is valid about being cautious about volunteers. Dennis knows who swiped the stuff, got some back and I don't think it ruined the appreciation Dennis had for the others that worked so hard to help. I don't know about the teachers pension fund or anything about the financing of SASCO, and I don't think we should speculate too much about that part of it. I agree that Jeff paid pennies a pound for the parts years ago, and Dennis probaby paid a lot more, but once the parts are paid for, he'll be able to do all the stuff we've been suggesting.

RMC61Coupe - 22 Oct 2004 15:41 GMT I am thinking about my situation and retirement. My wife is leaning that way to stay in Tucson. I got the word: Savanna GA. The post office there has one of the toughest labor problems in the area.
Anyway, if Dennis needs some help, here is what I can offer: 6 years expirence as an instructer and programmer with the IBM Point of Sale. Inventory set up in the IBM system. 4 Years supervisor expirence. I could volunteer for a couple of months before I would have to get another job. I have until Oct 31 (really the 29) to decide to take the early out or stay another 3 years in Savanna. My wife would go but I could see problems down the road.

RMC61Coupe - 23 Oct 2004 05:26 GMT Sorry to get off track. Anyway if Dennis would like some help, I can volunteer for a couple of months.
Put in papers today. Guess we will have to just visit Savanna. I do have the perfect Studebaker to come calling in.

jeff grohs - 23 Oct 2004 06:12 GMT maybe some wild ideas are needed to ensure stude parts for our grandkids ( my kids are 11 and 13, so that's a ways out).
SASCO becomes a small closed corporation. A small number of shareholders ( like 35) can pony up enough money to get the inventory and marketing issues listed above taken care of. There could be buyout provisions so that Dennis could regain sole control after things are on track.
Notre Dame must have a business school. Have them do a case study and suggest ways to stregthen the operation.
renegotiate the deal(s) with the city.
maybe some or all of these have been thought of/discused before. BUT, opening controversial discussion like this beats the heck out of more political blather ( Bush by a nose - ugly lawyer wars - Damaging to the country)
>i just got off the phone with Dennis and to say he was not thrilled with my >speculation on the NG about him and his business would be a understatement. We all have a vested interest in maintaining parts supplys. Any idea how much $$$ would be needed? I would think that more than 35 shareholders would be needed but that is because I would like to put a little money into that idea.

Most of us would fold when confronted with the long hours and thankless task.
Unfortunately, while I am not privy to the details on how the deal was originally struck, I suspect that it falls into the pitfalls of under capitalization along with a less than desired lease of the building from the city. Certainly, the city should ante up to fix the roof.
But, there does not appear to be a lot of wiggle room here which limits the chances for success.
The alternatives are not any better. Liquidation only to allow other vendors to pick the plums for pennies on the dollar would be the most likely scenario.
<sigh>

jeff grohs - 27 Oct 2004 07:51 GMT For this kind of close corporation, 35 is the maximum number of "shareholder" per my understanding. Yes, we have a vested interest, though we wouldn't want to float the debt, but help build a stronger entity.
