I would like to offer the vehicles described below to the NG before I
place them on e bay.
Time is something that each of us must deal with, some more urgent
than
others!
Therefore with the realization that I will never regain as much sight
as I had before the three operations last year & that my sight is now
in the stages of decline- I have decided to dispose of the two Larks
that I have acquired over the years & that I will not be able to
"show or shine" them as I initially had intended.
The first is the 64 "super Cruiser" that left the production line
with a standard 289 automatic & "reengineered" by the sales &
engineering divisions to be a sleeper 4 speed , severe service 289
that still has the original production number on the block & the tag
attached to the left bolt of the oil filter plug off housing noting
the "engine service code" 1558833 with NO cloverleaf! (numbers match
build sheet!)
Twin traction, big finned drums etc-however it is NOT a package car,
but has Avanti powered nameplates on fenders, R1 tag on front with
shiny valve &valley covers, & dipstick. (needs replating)
This was a zone ordered car for the Denver area (70 B) & the only
reference to R1 is in the shipping area. Due to costs restraints on
Studebaker in this era, I don't know if it was shipped to be
retrofitted, left S.Bend that way or what, there is a lot that was not
disclosed about the activities around the factory at this stage of
production. (it was built 8/14/63)
Some of you knew the antics of some dealers (& factory personnel) in
the Denver region - like the dealer that only ordered Avanti powered
Larks, Hawks, refused to stock 6 cylinders & had to be forced to order
one! This car falls into that same category, unusual!
I was in a closed barn in the eastern plains of Colorado up until last
year where it was placed almost ten years ago. The only rust to be
found is a small (much smaller than) dime size in the left side of the
trunk. It was painted within the last few years, had it's quota of
bumps & bruises, floors under rear seat & front look as good as new,
however is a "10 footer" that presents well! The seats were covered
with cheap covers & needs some NOS, all systems are operational.
This was one that runs like the proverbial bat outta hell, but we had
to have some stopping power, therefore the reason for the extensive
brake work!
.the brake system was gone over, new rear shoes, wheel
cylinders, drums turned , flex lines front & rear replaced, the twin
traction was drained refilled with proper fluid, cleaned & new gasket
applied along with axle seals. (3.31 RATIO) All fuel lines were
replaced along with filters.
This vehicle can be driven daily as is if desired, however it deserves
to be brought back to it's "glory days." (Also has a Georgia title)
The next car is also a 64 Lark (I'm partial-my last year employed
with Studebaker)
This is the Detweiler Daytona 4 door that was featured in Turning
Wheels in February 93 with 18,000 miles & 99% original at the time.
Sold new by Berwyn Detweiler & repurchased by his grandson (Pont.
Dealer now) in 78 from the original owner his grandfather sold it to.
(still has only 26,000 mi. today)
I bought it from a collector in Texas that had replaced the exhaust
with duals, bought new tires, installed electronic ignition, so it is
still about 90% original. I initially intended to DRIVE this baby
because it is that
.a NEW driver! All manuals & original window
sticker are intact. I cannot brag on the pristine original condition,
of this car, for when you inspect it - it's like going back in time to
a showroom & looking, driving a dealers personal car! (Still has the
Texas title) This vehicle has not seen rain ets for years,as it was
ALWAYS garaged.
Automatic, P.S., drum brakes cloth interior. Needs NOTHING but a
fresh tune up, due for an oil change & enjoy a new car!
Due to the three eye operations (1 emergency) & a cornea transplant &
the 67 years of mileage on me I feel that it is best to "hand it off"
to another SDCer that can DRIVE it & enjoy the showing & pride that
this car will bring!
It's not cheap, so don't expect to steal it - most of you know there
is a difference between cotton & silk, this is silk!
Frugal as we are, I feel that I have placed a "reasonable" price on
each. 55500. For the Cruiser & $6500. For the original Daytona.
Anything over those figures & you own either one.
