Hello group,
We took our '54 Commander Starliner back to the restoration shop on
Saturday to have them complete the assembly of the body now that the
engine and transmission are back in. They will be installing the
windshield and back glass, too. But before they put the back window
back in, they are going to cut openings in the rear parcel shelf for
the inlets and outlets for the 6-volt trunk-mounted air conditioning
unit that we have. Herein lies my need. We intend to install a rear
radio speaker as soon as we locate an AC-2302 speaker grille. That's
the one that is vaguely trapezoidal with a stylized "S" in the center.
In order to correctly locate the a/c inlet openings, I need the
dimensions of the speaker grille -- specifically, the length over the
outer corners of the trapezoid. If you are unfamiliar with this part,
please take a look at page 167 of John Bridges's book, Studebaker's
Finest.
Oh, and while I have your attention, while I have two leads on one of
these speaker grilles, if you have one that you are willing to sell
me, please let me know. But in any event, if you can provide me with
the dimensions, I really need them.
Kindest regards,
Alan Mende

My '53 Commander Starliner had an embossed outline of the rear speaker
opening stamped right on the steel shelf behind the top of the back seat. I
just cut out that area and the speaker fit was fine. However, I can measure
mine if you don't have the embossed guide. I am posting a picture of the
speaker separately.

Hi Paul,
Our parcel shelf has the oval outline already cut out. What I need
are the dimensions of the speaker grille so I can properly space the
a/c inlets. The space between the inlet frames is 8 1/4 inches on our
President parts car. Since I don't yet have a trapezoidal speaker
grille, I don't know if that 8 1/4 inches is enough room.
Any additional information you can supply will be greatly appreciated.
Alan

any photos that members post. Could you send them directly to me?
