Did anyone else catch TV Land's "Top Ten TV Cars" show this evening?
Maybe it was a rerun, but it was the first time I had seen it.
'Can't remember all the candidates, but they included Jim Rockford's
gold Firebird ('79 '80? I forgot the year), The Beverly Hillbillies'
1922 Oldsmobile cutaway "truck," Starsky & Hutch Nike-stripe Torino,
The Munster's coffin-mobile, K.I.T.T. 1982 Firebird, Fred Flintstone's
Flintmobile, Magnum's Ferrari, The General Lee, and Batmobile.
They had about a dozen seemingly unrelated judges from various walks
of public life, including Kustomizer George Barris, rate each car as
to which was the most memorable car from TV shows in which the car
played an important role.
#1 was Batmobile (George Barris said the budget to build that car was
only $15,000, but Ford donated a new vehicle for $1.00 to start off.
Didn't say what it was they donated. Anybody know?)
#2 was The General Lee
#3 was K.I.T.T. (I think)
not sure of the remaining order; maybe others will fill in the blanks.
#5 was Flintmobile (I think)
#8 was Starsky & Hutch
#10 was Jim Rockford's gold Firebird
etc.
If you ask me, The General Lee should have hands-down been #1. (They
reported over 300 1969 -I know some were doctored 1968- Dodge Chargers
being consumed during The Dukes of Hazzard show's run. Gulp. I saw one
of the certified real ones from the show at The MoPar Nationals here
about six years ago. It was just a previously-blue 318 car, as seen
from under the hood where they didn't bother to change the color. It
was well worn from use on and in the set.)
Glad they didn't use Studebakers! [There ya' go, Sonny; I worked
STUDEBAKERS into the thread to avoid the TP (Thread Police). <G>] BP

The list appears on their website, and gosh what a dumb list of choices.
First, wouldn't a network dedicated to the "golden age" have a cutoff
somewhere before Baywatch?
Then, you don't see Mrs. Peel's Lotus, Steed's Bentley, Maxwell Smart's
Sunbeam, the Green Hornet's big Chrysler with Bruce Lee driving, and that
hardtop convertible on Richard Diamond that they somehow contrived to open
or close once in each 30 minute segment...and what about Wilbur's Lark?
Over on the Big H where I spend my time, you'd think everybody had a deuce.
Even saw G/Sgt R. Lee up in the cab last week. Hoo rah.
What about Amos & Andy's Bearcat, Jack Benny's Maxwell, Ralph Kramden's bus?
And who can forget that Ward married June because her father owned a
Hupmobile dealership? What kind of pop-cult are they running here anyway?
Jeez, these 70's kids.

The car that was used by barris for the Batmobile was an experimental
built by Ford called the Lincoln Futura. I think there was even a
Jo-Han kit of it once.
It didn't require much changing for the Batmobile. Just some trim,
no body mods as far as I can tell by looking at pictures of both. They
added pipes in the back and the light on top and repainted it.

When I first got the Power Hawk in 1966 and it was my daily driver, I
was working in Seabrook, Md for a NASA contractor. I had to make
numerous trips to Goddard on a daily basis and somehow, my car became
the "RatMobile."

the Green Hornet's car, Black Beauty, was on the top 10.
people went to the TVLAND website, and voted for their favorites......
girlfriend voted, I forgot

I have seen some of the cars mentioned in shows, but I also saw the Green
Hornet car on the highway. I think that TVLAND should have had a cut off for
shows pre-1980.

The Batmobile, for the 60's TV show, was made from the Lincoln Futura show
car.

I am the only one that remembers that George Reeve (Clark Kent/Superman) drove
a Nash Healy?
BTW the actor that played Perry White had a bit part in a Studebaker film about
the fire in the 1870's in which the slogan about giving more than they asked
for was the only thing saved from the fire, according to the film.

Ok , just looked it up. Here is the web site to vote,
but should have closed on the 20th. But still took my vote.

And the following page should have directed me to the results page. But
didn't.

Seems they forgot all the ones across the pond that were also famous.
How about Lady Penelope's FAB1 pink Rolls Royce that the new Phantom looks
like from the front. And The Saint's Volvo P1800, Daktori's zebra-painted
Land Rover....
And did anyone mention the 1966 GTO Monkeemobile yet?
Craig.
