For the 3.5 years we would drive up and visit Robin at college, the last four
miles were very intersting. By some stretch of ones imagination we would pass a
series of small homes, some looking like the families could just barely make
ends meet. But four homes in a row had extensions built on to the back of their
homes, they looked like very wide garages. They turned out to be hangars. Four
homes, four familes one next to the other had small aircraft parked insidethese
ad ons garages.

I went as far to purchase a Chart for the NY Area and could not find a listed
strip anywhere near these houses.

Eventually we discovered that they used a plowed field (grassy area) as their
runway

One house had a Luscombe and one had a Super Cub, I never found out what the
other two had.

We have several 'air park' housing developments near us.
They have a most unbelievable mix of aircraft....
P51's, AT-6's, Cub's, 707's, ultralights...
Makes weekends interesting to listen to....

Doesn't that 707 belong to John Travolta?  "Scientology of the Air", or
something like that?  LOL
Jeff Rice - 23 Oct 2004 18:30 GMT
Yes it does.
He does a pretty good job of keeping the two separate.
He also just got his rating on the 747-400.

We must be in a military "flight path"  about every weekend, there are a
"few" choppers that fly over, ya' kin hear 'em coming for miles!
What a neat sound, and during the Indy 500, Brickyard 400, and Formula
races, we always have something interesting in the skies! They get in
formation North of Indy, and are "playing" around up there, neat to watch
them as they get into their formation

John Travolta has a home somewhere with his B-707 parked in the "driveway"
alonf with a G-2. I saw a photo of th house, ...the house draws your eyes away
from the aircraft it is so big.

You have to hand it to him, when his career in films was in trouble he invested
in aircraft with his money got his ticket and did charter work to make money.

TAKE A LOOK AT THE NEW SHIRTS.....THEY ARE NEAT

That's about 10 miles north of my house.
He bought a 'lot' in 'Jumbolaire', which is the property built up by the
founder of Nautilus, of health machine fame. He built the runway for his
jets, then he got divorced and his ex got the whole property in the
settlement. She's a pretty shrewd entrepreneur herself, and switched the
property from a single huge estate to an air park. Both my daughters had
their high school prom's held at the main house of the mansion, which is
rented out for weddings and such... Pretty place.

From what I remember, the Convair 880 and 990 were 10% faster than the 720's
and the DC-8's. Their downfall was their fuel consumption.

TWA was the first to dump theirs.

I think that applied only to the 990's.  The other drawback is that they
were narrow bodied aircraft only seating five across.
