What a great time! I needed a road trip, but to throw in a beautiful
collection of Studebakers, a first class resort hotel, plenty of great Stude
guys and gals, and a nicely organized and run meet was just too much.
I left Northern California about noon on Thursday. Leisurely motored to
Alex M's place in Camarillo (about 350 miles south). Alex had the tri-tip
on the grill when I got there. We left early Friday morning for Phoenix.
One unplanned side trip to Pasadena, but when you get an impromptu
opportunity to cruise Colorado Blvd in 2 nice Stude hot rods, you don't pass
it up <g>. We arrived at the meet about 4:30...just in time to clean up the
cars, partake of the host club's provided dinner, and sip a few margaritas.
Fred Cook and Dick Grove had already checked in to our hotel room. Fred was
doing his Johnny Stude Seed thing and had picked up a '53 from Bob Miles for
delivery to its new owner in Chico, CA. When I registered, the only thing
left was suites. Ours was HUGE with a nice view of the first fairway from
our balcony. All this for $30/night each.
The Grand Canyon chapter did an excellent job. They served breakfast each
morning, dinner on Friday night, handed out iced bottles of water all day
Saturday, gave even us "display only" participants a nice wood wall plaque.
Everything ran smoothly and looked effortless...even though many more cars
showed up than was expected (near 120 I believe).
It was great to renew friendships with some Arizona Stude buddies and meet
some new ones. One high point was Bob Miles piling several of us into his
beautiful Lark Cruiser and chauffeuring us to his favorite BBQ joint.
Another was Denny L. and I "sneaking" off to photograph our similar
Starliners side by side.
The trip back was "hammer down". 780 miles in under 13 hours. S2D treated
me well. Blythe for fuel, Ontario for lunch, more fuel in Santa Barbara,
dinner and more fuel just south of Salinas...plus several rest stop stretch
breaks. I think I stop at those as much to stretch as I do to run through 4
quick gears on the on-ramp <g>.
Thanks Fred, Dick, Bob, Ebon, Jerry, Denny, and everyone else that helped
make my weekend. A special thanks to the Grand Canyon Chapter...an
excellent meet!

Dido for me too. I just walk in the door.
1200 miles one way, but such a well plan meet, I'd do it again next
week. ---NOT---- but in a month or so. <G>
They had many more vender than expected, and lots of parts for any one in
need or in my case, just thought I could use someday.
Thanks for the BBQ Bob.
Got lots of post to read.

I can do nothing but echo Dick and Ebon, that was one of the best run meets
that I have ever attended. The hotel staff was also very helpful and friendly.
I was carrying Bob Miles' 54 Commander hard top for delivery to Will Carrol so
I wanted secure parking for it. I was immediately escorted to the golf course
maintenance yard about a block away and provided with a locked and secure
trailer parking site for the duration of the show.
Got to meet, for the first time, Arkiejazz (Steve) and Ebon Jones from the
newsgroup and a whole bunch of other friendly folks. It was a lot of fun seeing
Jerry Kaiser, Bob Miles and Kelly Marion agin and trying to dry up Jerrys beer
supply.

Fred it was a great meet and was made better by having you CA guys
there. Those TX guys are pretty good too. Ill send some pictures I took
later. I didn't take many because I had my hands full most of the time. It
is hard to juggle a beer and camera at the same time <G> I sure enjoyed
seeing Dick and Alex's cars they where two of the finest cars at the meet.
They gave me some ideas for my 53 coupe.
Fred Ill roll under that 51 later today and see what that rear end is and
email you.

Oops, hit the send button prematurely. I didn't even get to say how much fun it
was to share space with Dick Steinkamp and Dick Grove. Dick G. is (I think) the
only person that can talk more than me but since he is usually talking about
Studes it's worth listening to. Now Fred hit the send button!!

Yep, nice folks - knew them from the early 70s. They did a lot for the
San Jose Chapter (Golden Pacific) in many ways.
I didn't even see them this time - too many things to do and see.

It was great to me Steve, Ebon, Dick and Dick. Dick S had me captive with the
photos in the Cruiser, and conned the waitress at the Big Apple to take our
photo. Ebon insisted the wagon was a Stude, because he said it was! Can't argue
with that. On to Spokane and Reno next year!

I wonder what the BBQ in Spokane and Reno is like? My treat, Bob.

I'm happy you guys made it. We had a ball putting on the meet. The
whole gang worked hard. Mother Nature sure helped with beautiful
weather. Glad that I am in AZ rather than Nebraska. Sorry that I
didn't get to meet some of the NG folks. I was running around like a
chicken with it's head cut off collecting judging sheets and photos to
prepare the awards. You may have seen me on my red Stude golf car.

Heck, it was a great meet, but I didn't get to spend any time with
anyone since I was chained to my pile of shi.....real good stuff I had
hauled for sale. Wish I would have had time to have a beer with Fred
and shoot the sh.t. That goes for everyone else, too. I was real
curious to match faces with names. I didn't even get to drive a Stude
since I just sold my runner and I was dragging a '61 project Lark. I
did get to talk to all the Phoenix chapter guys that have dragged this
particular Lark sedan around. We all agreed it's a sweet, rust free
little thing and deserves a better fate. To those of you I missed,
hope to meet you in Spokane. I hope things go better before that meet.
This year was just filled with mishap, then I had to hurry in on
Saturday morn, set up, then it was all over. But hats off to the folks
that put it all on. I am determined to have more time next meet. KM

Thanks for your kind comments. The whole committee had a great time as
well. We appreciate all of you joining us. I'm sorry that I didn't get
the opportunity to meet some of the other NG folks but I was busy
running around getting the awards prepared. I did have a ball with my
little red Stude golf car. It came in very handy for the hospitality
and security folks as well. Dick S and I did slip away for a few
minutes to shoot a few pictures of S2D and 1Cool53 Starliners. I'm
anxious to see how they turned out.

Everybody with a "host" ribbon on looked like they were having great fun.
I'm sure there was plenty going on under the surface (sort of like a duck
swimming), but you'd never know it. The comfort and pleasure of the
participants was clearly the #1 priority and completely accomplished.
I'll send you the pics, Denny.

A great time was had by all. Wish I had time to meet more people. The
caravan over was fun. I would see older couples drive up and look and my
car and then drive up farther and look at Dick's car. At rest stops,
people would ask what kind of cars they were.
I averaged 20.7 MPG for the trip, driving 70-75 on the way over and
80-85 on the way back. going downhill towards Indio traffic was going 90
for a few miles. I discovered that exhaust gases were leaking into the
trunk and then into the car. Solved that by opening one of the outside
vents to pressurize the car. Have to seal the trunk better on the
bottom. I also discovered that the wife doesn't like long trips in a
loud hot rod.
