I just want to say thank you to Lee DeLaBarre and Ted Harbit. To Ted for his
continuing assistance in helping me with my Hawk's engine woes and Lee for
providing his mechanical knowledge, garage, tools, stories, tours, teaching
skills, letting me look at his Rune and forgiving my drooling upon it. (You
guys are really sick...I'm talking about slobbering all over his Honda
bike........geeeeze).  Yesterday was a pretty long day.  By the time I got
back home from Lee's joint I had been up 22 hours.  Of course my Golden
Retriever thought that would be a good time to take for a walk around the
block, so he did.  It was good to get out and stretch my legs.  All in all,
my Hawk is running great and I'm keeping my fingers crossed I don't have any
more issues with it.  This was the first time Lee and I have spent any time
together.  After taking the Hawk out for a test run we loaded it up into my
trailer, synched it down then we went out for a quick dinner.  Had fun.
Thanks again Ted and Lee for everything you've done for me.

Brad,

It was my pleasure!  Had a great time (other than my   F&$@ up early
in the day).  Hopefully, this will cure the gremlins lurking within
and you are more than welcome to come back anytime!

So are you coming over to the dark side yet or are you still a Lark man? <G>

The dark side is not winning me over yet.  Yes, it IS a beautiful car
and is a blast to drive.  Man, I do love a 4-speed!  However, I am
still a sucker for a Lark and prefer the shorter wheelbase cars.

There are a few things Brad wants to take care of on the car and I
will be more than happy to assist in any way I can (if he'll let me).

By the way, N8, I DO have a '61 Hawk here if you really want one.  It
is a bit of a project but has new floor pans. <G>

I have seen that car, and I do believe it started its journey to your
place rather close to mine.  You will recall that there was no attempt
made to divert it from its intended course, this was purely intentional.

Hmmmmmmm  you seem to be correct N8.  I seem to remember bribing you,
John and Marsha with a tasty lunch to get you all to help pick that
car up and CARRY it to the trailer!  Still has that MOPAR clipped
frame under it as well.  You have to admit, that is a beautiful body
tub though.

Oh, I was thinking of the black mess.  I thought you were using the good
'61 tub for something else?  Were I confident that the frame under the
black thing was solid, I'd consider a vulcan car meld, but I'm not.
Actually I'm not totally opposed to the idea of a mopar suspension but
who knows if all the parts are there?

Yes, I was going to use that '61 tub but came across a much better '53
coupe tub and am using that instead.  The black '61 is spread across
the country by now helping others live.

Brad,

What did you find wrong??? Inquiring minds want to know<G>.

Paul
Ray Fichthorn - 27 Oct 2004 15:20 GMT
Paul..
Sometime  just after returning home from the national meet... the darn thing broke a valve spring.
It has the R-3 valve conversion to the heads. I took a trip to my brother's house in Ohio- and being
1/2 way to Brad's.. I went the rest of the way and we swapped out another spring. We thought it was
just a fluke, and we had gotten a bad spring. Sometime later, it broke another one... I know Brad
hasn't been drag-racing or overrevving it... so It made the (new) springs somewhat suspect. Breaking
one is no big deal, but when the 2nd let go... it begged to find out what was causing it. Between
Brad, Ted Harbit, and Lee...it was decided the prudent thing to do would be to replace all the
springs... So.. Brad took the car to Lee's for the repairs...

This is where he'll have to take over.. I don't know what Lee and Brad "found" was wrong, or if it
was just a bad set of springs- or whatever...

Could not find anything wrong in the engine other than the broken
springs.  Found three broken when we pulled it apart on Monday.  Now
has a replacement set of R2 springs in it and seems to like them.
Played with the carb and timing a bit and took it out for a drive.  I
am thinking I ran the car a bit harder than Brad usually does but he
did not complain.  It felt pretty good and, after it has some miles on
it, I think we can do more to get a bit more pep from it.

Lee,  I didn't think you ran my car hard at all.  If I did think that, you
would have known...I'm not too bashful in expressing myself when miffed.  I
drove the Hawk yesterday afternoon for about 20-25 miles and all seems
great.  Had my foot in it quite a bit cause it sounds so good when the rest
of the carb kicks in.  Man I love my Hawk (now that it's fixed, could have
sold it for 25 bucks a few days ago.)

I guess I should have pushed a bit harder then (NOT).  You are right
though, it does sound good and, once it is broken in, I bet will pull
like a freight train.  I sure seems to want to run.

Well $#!T, I guess I should have told you the engine was trash and
waved a couple dead presidents in front of your face....
grrrrrrrrrrrrr  I miss ALL the good opportunities!

Glad you are enjoying the car and I hope it gives many tens of
thousands of happy miles to you.  You and the car deserve it!

You've taken one too many drives with Ray at the wheel of Linda's car.

Brad,
Spending a day at "Lee & Debbie's" place is a blast! Can't  think of very
many others I wouldn't mind spending a day or two with! Great people

Brad Treganowan - 27 Oct 2004 01:40 GMT
You got that right Jim.  It was fun getting to know Lee as I've only spoken
to him twice briefly in the past.  Also met Debbie briefly as she was
heading off to work and class while Lee stayed home to play with my car.
What a slacker.  Nice folks indeed.

Hey Jimmy,

Why don't you take a day or two off before Reedsville and come on up?
Would love to have company and it would give you a chance to spend
some quality time with what's left of that convertible!

Lee,
I seem to be spending too much time with the 62 ragtop I have at the shop!
<G> Found out the other 1/4 to door gap was also a "make a gap" with bondo!
Geeesh! I have to cut the floor on the right side also, and use a come a
long to "make a real gap"
I'm going to write to "somebody" so that "morons" can't buy bondo!
Hey! the gap is too big, I know, I'll fill it up and "make a gap" with
bondo, after I use my roller and paint it, nobody will know!
It should be illegal for paint stores to sell bondo to amateurs!
Jim (people amaze me) Turner
Lee - 27 Oct 2004 13:13 GMT
Well, at least you know there is no Bondo in the '64.  Hell, there's
no metal left in the '64 either <G>

Sometimes bondo is a useful thing.

Such as using on the typical wide gaps that T-Cabs have on the front
door to windshild/cowl area.  It's the only way to fix a bad factory
fit, (or should I say a horrendous factory fit?).

Mine fits great! What'd you do wrong?  Actually, you must have a
lemon...bad door fit, cracked cowl at the brake M/C, bad clutch
linkage....I'll take that lemon off your hands! <G>

My old T-Cab back in RI had good fit but this one did not.  I've seen
quite a few that don't and I suspect that it was a factory error
fixture-wise. But the magic of bondo (seven years ago) fixed it just
fine and it's holding up just fine.

Sometimes bondo is good and sometimes, well what more can I say?
