Robert Black - 23 Nov 2004 12:26 GMT Wonder what this Packard will go for? http://cgi.msn.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=6389&i tem=4506093579&rd=1
Bill Glass - 23 Nov 2004 13:41 GMT I would love to say that the car will bring $45 to $60K but, look at the top. It has more wrinkles than my grandmothers face.
It could be the installer did not know how to do a top, or, the car is not even all the way around.
I am sure that Packard afficenados will bid, but not as high as it should be, and there will be a few who will bid beyond their expertise.

J. Lee - 23 Nov 2004 17:47 GMT >and there will be a few who will bid beyond their expertise. hmmmm, sounds like me. I've always called a good car day one in which I lost less than $1000 on the deal, lol. Thanks God I don't do it for a living, lol. Lee Skelly

John Poulos - 23 Nov 2004 18:34 GMT Speaking of doing it for a living, that thought crossed my mind today as I was wire brushing and painting all the suspension parts on the Challenger. No one in their right mind would bid high enough to pay me for detailing invisible stuff, but it's a "Just have to do it thing" Damn N8 <g>

Signature JP/Maryland Studebaker On the Net http://stude.com My Ebay items:http://www.stude.com/EBAY/ 64 Challenger (Green Wrapper) 64 GT Hawk (Ca. Div) 63 R2 4 speed GT Hawk (keeper) 56 E12 Pickup (sold)
NateN - 23 Nov 2004 18:59 GMT hey, you gotta admit that nice detailed suspension components are very very sexy.
Look on the bright side, I've gotten less anal as I've aged. When I was in college, I rebuilt the suspension on my then-GF's $1100 beater '69 Valiant so it would pass inspection - I took the control arms into the school's engine shop, ran them through the parts washer, bead blasted them, and then painted them before I put the new bushings and ball joints in... If you saw the underside of that car it would drive you nuts and then you'd be compelled to do the same on all your cars :)

Barry - 23 Nov 2004 18:05 GMT It is a beautiful car, & looks like a complete restoration, but is that orange engine correct? I do not rememeber 56 sr. Packards being that engine color. Caribbeans were always on the top of my dream car list, but I sold my 55 in '89 after divorcing wife #1, and unloaded my '53 in '01 because it needed too much work. Someone in OH had 2 very nice '56 Caribbeans for sale recently on ebay. One was a nice converted "400". Both disappeared before ending. The reserve will probably be so high on this one it will be a no-sale. BARRY

I wonder if you could get a manual shift car,Id be afeard of that Ultra-Matic taking a dump, but I love the car.

There was a manual shift with O/D at the last Barrett Jackson in Scottsdale in January. 55 Caribbean. There also was a drop dead and absolutely quiet running 1932 902 Packard sedan there also.

Bill Glass - 23 Nov 2004 20:21 GMT >I wonder if you could get a manual shift car,Id be afeard of that >Ultra-Matic taking a dump, but I love the car. Ultramatics in that car did not and do not suffer from the same problems that the 56J did/do with that engine and tranny..
A lot of trouble associated with the Ultramatics and the Hawks have be associated with the flexing of the frame that was under the Hawks. The Studebaker frames could not take the torque of that engine and the prolonged twisting of the drive train.
The Packard was built like a brick sh.t house, that was the same car my mom had before my dad died and she drove that car everyday from White Plains to the Bronx and back and in the worst weather and traffic and the one thing that never failed on the car was the tranny.
The ultramatics did not have a lot of bearings, but had bushings, and the way that the tranny was flexed the bushings wore unevenly.
5 years ago there was the Hard top version of that car at a car show, and it was parked next to me. I got talking with the owner, his biggest gripe was the gear selector and the way it worked or didn't work.

news.verizon.net - 23 Nov 2004 20:34 GMT '56 Carribean should have a 374 Cubic inch V8 painted Bronze with chrome valve covers.. '56 Golden Hawk had a 352 painted red with silver gray valve covers.

I was always under the imprssion that ALL 352's were red across the two lines.
I wonder then if the engine in that car is original, since the color is red, could it have been a replacement.
Wait,,,,,,,,,,,,I have an engine at a friend house its from a Packard it was the source of my new converter, the engine in red.
Something is fishy. athe enine is at my friends place cause I don't have room right now, and I have a Packard engine in the back of my garage that is red also, and that I know came out of a Packard, got it from the A& M garage.

I don't know about any of the other engines.

BTW, does anybody know the wherabouts of '56 Caribbean convertible serial 5699-1258? It was supposedly sold on ebay in 2001 and was previously owned by Henry Brandolf of Kernersville, NC. It was sold new by my friend Carl E. Filer Jr. in Greenville, PA (see one photo of the car on delivery day in the Oct '03 TW), and I have five spare, crisp, bright color photos of the car on delivery day (different photos) I had made from original slides, with the dealership building behind it, and they are free to the current owner. They belong with the car!

Ray Fichthorn - 29 Nov 2004 07:58 GMT Henry still owns the car- and I often work on it. I have done some work to the tortion level suspension, brakes, and power steering. The car just doesn't get driven enough...

For some reason, someone at the Packard Club believed that car was sold in 2001 and I know I saw it at Mr. Brandolf's in 1998 and he was trying to sell it then.
I'll find his address and send him the photos. If he's not too interested in them by chance, perhaps a subsequent buyer would be.
