Is that what you figured it would have got at Charolette?

Craig.

If the car is as nice as Mark says it is (and I believe him) it should
be a first place car at ANY international meet.  However, with the way
GT's seem to get treated lately by the judging staff, they would
probably classify it as a parts car.

The 320 was meant as a joke.

It would need some under hood detailing to score much over 350, with
the other minor age issues, 320 might be close to correct.

Well, at least it has the correct lighter!  That should help the points.

Hey, It is good to be back.  After my R2 or '41 Commander did not sell the
first time on eBay I realized that I am so out of touch with you guys that I
needed to come back.  The reason for my absence is convaluted but I will try
and explain it in another thread.  Still no real job though ... The van sat
where we left it for a while now it is parked with the other one, I am short
of funds to fix them so will settle for the free storage!

OK now to the Hawk.  It is really nice but ... it is a factory assembled
car.  This will spark the old debate about restored vs original.

With a restored car you have the ability to inspect every nut & bolt, you
can take a week to align the fenders and doors.  You can repaint any part
that is not perfect.  You can hand pick the chrome & trim and delicately put
it into place.  The restored car is really superior to the factory original
because of the attention to miniscule detail a luxury they did not have on
the production line.  So the value of this Hawk is it's originality and what
you care to place on that, we have 2 examples here in the Black Hawk Chapter
of '64 GT's where the restoration cost well into the $40,000's they are nice
so I figure the reserve that Rich has put on the car is reasonable .... so
is it a 320 point car? As history shows it is up to the judges!

It just amazes me that the Judges have no respect for an original car,
they should have a separate class, but thats just my opinion. and you
know what thats worth.

I think most judges do, but they still judge to the 'as new'
standard and even a 8000 mile Hawk needs a lot of under hood detailing
after 40 years. The Survivor Avanti scored in the 330's before
detailing, 392 after. Normally, even a really nice original car will
need new paint under the hood, new decals, hoses clamps, rubber and so on.
I spent over 2K detailing Goldie and it was probably as nice a car
as a low mileage example when I started.

I do know that Studebaker was pretty sloppy with the yellow weather seal
cement.  I know of instances where the judes took points off for that and it is
the way the factory made the car.

I'm listing it for Black Hawk member Rich Volkmer, it made it to $25,000 at
the Mecum auction here last month.  It is a GREAT original car.

Hey Mark!  Good to see you on the NG again.

I was in your area (Joliet) twice in the last week but was pressed for
time and had to be in and out.  Wish I could have stopped in for a
visit.

How's the van coming along?

That is quite a listing (write-up) to go with an exceptional car.
My memory may be slipping.  I have a glove box door off a Hawk that I thought
was for 1963, but it has woodgrain on it.  Was this a mid-year change or do I
have a '64 only door?
The part about the unused spare brings back memories.  One day at work I was
talking about the unused spare in my '63 Cruiser when a few people were around.
The Cruiser had 28K miles and had replacement tires on the ground, but the
spare was unused.  One day shortly after that, I drove that car to work.  When
I came out of work, the car had a flat tire.  I put the never used spare on the
car to drive home.  I then found out that there was nothing wrong with the tire
that was flat other than the air was let out.  Much later, I thought that I
should have asked to check the parking lot surveillance videos.  I never found
out who did it.  It is amazing what some people find to be humorous.

Early 63 was only wood grained behind the gages.

There was a guy who refused to park his truck and trailer (or at least the
40' goose neck trailer) at the Speedway trailer parking area in Daytona. He
chose to park the whole rig at the motel parking lot and took up four spaces
and blocked most of one aisle. Didn't bother me, nor anyone I knew, but it
bugged some dork enough that he had a couple of his trailer tires slashed. I
betcha it was not a Turkey Run attendee, but rather one of the wedding
parties that were going on Saturday night. Kinda makes you wonder...

If there had been such a thing as Federal Motor Vehicle Decency
Standards back then, I would hope the first standard would have
prohibited building 1962-1964 Hawks with half a "full dash!" <G>.

I agree wholeheartedly Bob!  I think you and I discussed this at
last year's South Bend meet!  I'd have to add a tach, even though it
would detract from the original "aura" of the car.

Man, would I love to own that baby!!   I used to not like the gold
with red interior on '63's, but I've grown to really appreciate it.
At least it's not Ermine White (like my '63 Daytona is!)!

Just curious if anybody knows the serial no. of this car.  If it was
built and shipped that first week of Oct. '62, it should have a fairly
close serial no. to my Daytona--63V-5224, which was built 9/28/62 and
picked up at the plant as a retail delivery on 10/8/62.
