Today I learnt that my Subaru 2000 Legacy wagon, with 49,000 miles on it,
needs front brakes and the rear brakes need to be refaced. Is this a bit
early? My previous two Subarus (1984 GL10 and 1992 Legacy) went to
85K+ miles without brake problems. I am not driving any differently!

I get 40k on the front (with 2/3 the meat
left on the pad) and 80k on the rear
(about 1/2 the meat left). Have never
had to change the rotors.

My 2000 Forest @ 68,000 miles has about 1/3 on front and 1/4 on rear
remaining. Is your new Legacy heaver than you old cars?

Not really. It is a wagon, as opposed to the sedan versions, but the
2000 Legacy was roughly the same in size and shape. Looks like my
front brakes went early. The rear ones are supposed to be okay.
I was really just wondering if this was a known problem with the
2000 Legacies. Looks like an outlier.

FWIW, my 01 OBW was down to nothing on an edge of the driver's front
pad at 60000 miles.
My Mazda 626 went nearly 100k on the original pads.
I just figure they're pretty heavy cars, and this one I owned full
time here in Chicago doing lotsa stop and go.
