The tape player in my Suburu Liberty GX 1994 model has recently started to
produce background hiss and there seems to be some bass or other sound
missing when playing tapes as it just doesn't sound right.

First thing I want to do is clean the tape head. What is the best method to
use for this? Failing this cany anybody suggest any other likely cause for
this problem?

Radio Shack should carry a tape cleaner and you might want to get a
demagnetizer too. I both items at Fred Meyer I think. Most department stores
with an electronics dept. carry them.

And on a more ambitious note, If you can get to them....a long Q-tip dipped
in head cleaner to scrub the heads.  Of course, this only works if you
can open the
tape door and see the heads.

I'd agree with that btw head cleaner is usually iso-propyl alcohol. In the
UK we can get a tape which cleans the heads when used in play mode some are
used dry my own preference is for the ones which do use the propanol
