Lately, there has been a loud humming noise coming from the rear of my 97
impreza when I drive .  I know its not the exhaust.  It has about 73,000
miles on it with the orginal tires i think.  My bro says it might be the
rear differential thats making the noise.  Any ideas?  Thanks.

Wheel bearings

My tires (Michelin Xones) developed a noticeable humming noise after the
tread wore down to 5/32 or 1/2 original. Talked to tire man who looked at
tires and WE saw a slightly schoped (spelling) on all the tires. Tire man
said this is the result of rotating the tires in the same direction always
and not following Michelins and other major manufacture rotation
recommendation. The correct rotation for most manufactures and Machine(awd
cars) is:back tires to front and front tires cross to rear which we did.
Noise almost disappeared after about 1,000 miles and rotating again. ed
