'95 Impreza 2.2... I'm getting an AT Temp warning light and I think my fluid level is low. But, I simply cannot get a readable level on the dipstick. Because of the twists in the tube, there is fluid smeared in different places on the stick. I just can't tell how much is in there. I guess I just have to empty and refill to make sure the level is ok. Anyone else have this problem? You get the idea... since there won't be fresh stuff slopped in the tube while you are doing this, at some point you'll get a level clean enough to read clearly. Checking ATF is a statistical problem. Just keep checking until you get a good idea of approximately what the level is. You should get a solid line of liquid where the level is on the stick if you don't, the level is so low its off the stick bottom. Adding several ounces probably wont hurt, so maybe start with that. It can take considerable time to have the liquid drain from the tube before you get a level after filling. Pull the dipstick out for several minutes to let the AT fluid drain out of the fill tube. Inset stick SLOWLY and get the measurement. Sounds like a big donation to my dealer is in my future. I got mine to start flashing one winter by locking the rear wheels with the parking brake while coasting along a slippery road. After draining out exactly 4 qts and replacing the same amount (it really needed it after 100K miles, fluid was quite brown, but still clear) and unable to get a good reading on the stick (seemed to be just a little below full-hot, with a smear above), I decided to take a reading with the engine off and hot. It read just a bit above full-hot (1/8"), so I figure this must be close enough, since the level would drop a little with the engine running and the fluid circulating. I'm planning to do another 4 qt change this weekend to further reduce the amount of old fluid (the system holds 8 qts total). If the car drives well, I would try a fluid change to see what condition yours is in. You can also disconnect the battery to clear the codes and see if they go away with fresh fluid. Bob |
