6 month old 2003 Baja with less than 10k miles on it has recently
developed a noise from underneath the vehicle while under hard
acceleration which sounds like a loose heat shield.  Is it too soon
for this to be the case?

No, stuff happens.  I had one of the fasteners on the front right wheel well
let go less than six months after I bought my Outback.  The fasteners are
made of plastic and sometimes they break.

I suggest crawling underneath the car and checking.
