Gumby - 22 Aug 2005 00:03 GMT Just curious what everyone else is getting.
Me: 2005 Outback Sport 5 speed with 8400 miles. Almost all city driving, southern US, air conditioner used most of the time.
25.5 miles to the gallon. I have seen 27 once and as low as 23. But it is almost always around 25.
Cheers John
Bonehenge - 22 Aug 2005 00:48 GMT >Just curious what everyone else is getting. My '01 OBW 5 speed manual never saw more than 24, but it had a four bike Yakima rack on top in 40,000 miles. I'm sure the rack cost a mile per gallon, or so.
If I hammered it, it got 22, if I babied it on highway rides, 24. Rarely did it ever have more than 2 people on board. Most driving was just me, 70% suburban, 30% open highway. Typical tanks got 23-23.5 MPG, on Connecticut's freaky gas blends.
I used Mobil 1 5w-30 changed every 5k, replaced air filters every 10k, and replaced the plugs @ 25k.
FWIW, I've now got a 2005, 6 speed manual, 4 liter V6, 4x4 Toyota Tacoma (all 4500 pounds of it!) with about 100 more horsies than the Subie, and it averages 19-20, with the same driver, on the same roads, in the same situations. At 3900 miles, the Toyota hasn't even seen synthetic lubes yet.
Edward Hayes - 22 Aug 2005 01:35 GMT 2000 Forester AT. Local Urban = 21mpg with air on 100% and 24mpg air off 100%. Expressways nets 28 at 70 mph on cruise.

H - 22 Aug 2005 17:14 GMT I log all fuel ups and mileage, my 04 Forester XS, 5spd gets, 9.14litres/100kms (30.75mpg) on average since January 2005.
My best tank got 7.7litres/100kms (36.74mpg).
The average number includes 15,000km of combined driving including trips to Mount Washington (Vancouver Island) in the snow and some limited trailer towing.
I'd love to get 45mpg + but for an AWD vehicle with the Foresters practicality, not bad.
BTW, Our 90 Legacy, 5spd gets about 27mpg combined, although that car gets more city miles than the forester.

My 95 Legacy, 5MT, 2.2 4cyl engine gets 7.5l/100kms (32 mpUSg) in commuting (95% Hwy). It's too bad that Subaru don't make a smaller engined car anymore. My next commuter will likely be a Corolla - I'll just suffer on snow days like (almost) everyone else.

When I bought it, I averaged 20.5 MPG, combined city and highway - mainly city. After about three years, the mileage slowly creeped up to 22.93 (total miles 32,000). I kept track of every tank and calculated MPG per tank, total MPG and several other things. The best tank I got was 27.24 - all highway and driving relatively slow (60-65 MPH).

I notice some pinging or detonation rather frequently and wonder if going up a fuel grade might improve mileage. I normally burn Mobil or Speedway 87 octane.

23 city 26 highway with Thule 1600 cargo box on. About 1 mpg better on highway with it off. Oil changed regularly at 3000/4000 miles. Burns less than 1/2 qt between changes.....the same as when it was new.

Yesterday I did the 650 km trip from Auckland to Wellington in my 1995 Legacy Wagon (2.5l with 4EAT, 195,000 km on the clock) and I used 15.4 l/100 km (14.7 miles per USgal) instead of my normal 9 l/100km (25 miles per USgal).
As my figures are normally very similar to Gumby, but this time were very similar to yours, perhaps we both have similar problems.
Here is a photo of my car just after refilling at the halfway point:

Some sort of spoiler on the trailer ala truck cab could help - or you could try mounting the wings on the Legacy ;)
(Mental note, just took a b4 around the South Island before the beginning of the last set of petrol rises, must tally the mileage)

I'm not sure. The glider was a fiberglass two seater weighing (manufacturer's specification) 400 kg. The trailer is not lightweight.

chipsoars - 26 Aug 2005 02:17 GMT I've towed my glider & trailer-27B/cobra fibreglass & averaged 21 mpg running about 70mph with an '05 OBW LLBean 3.0L. Hardly knew the trailer was there except when crossing a bridge with a very stiff X-wind coming through a mountain gap. That was kind of interesting.

Hardly knew the > trailer was there except when crossing a bridge with a very stiff > X-wind coming through a mountain gap. That was kind of interesting. I've towed a PW5 behind mine quite a lot, and it hardly notices it. But this Grob Twin in a heavy boxy trailer was a different matter entirely. The Twin Astir is 2.5 times the weight of a PW5 and the trailer is probably 3 or 4 times the weight of the PW-5 trailer. Your ASW27 is only slightly heavier than a PW5 and the Cobra is a good trailer.

cobs - 27 Aug 2005 03:25 GMT > (Mental note, just took a b4 around the South Island before the > beginning of the last set of petrol rises, must tally the mileage) Follow-up: 2000 rsk b4, 88k on the clock at the start, road trip around a good part of the South Island NZ. Mix of open road, urban, and some slow crawling over unsealed roads of various condition (Forrester / Outback clearance would have been nice in places).
Total km = 2653, fuel 344.29ltr (mix 96 & 98). 12.9Ltr/100km or 21.7mpg.
Lovely trip - wasn't driving with an eye on the fuel economy - the roads are pretty good, and mostly empty. Need to do it again and cover the far south (this time crossed over through the Haast pass to Wanaka / Queenstown, then via Laurence to Dunedin before heading north up the east coast.)
Still, Warbirds over Wanaka next year - that's a great excuse.

For those who don't know what is in that trailer it is a Grob "Twin Astir" two seat high peformance (ok, 38:1 glide angle is only medium these days) fiberglass sailplane. Our club has two of this model that we use for everything from teaching raw beginners to fly, to flying cross-country and taking part in competitions.

Any ideas and/or suggestions? My '05 Outback with auto trans is consistently getting 18 in town, 21 highway. Not good, but my dealer said it was typical. Is it? (The odo says 7300 miles.) Can the onboard mileage calibration thing be wrong? I haven't checked the gas mileage the old-fashioned way.
They also said that there was no brake noise at full steering lock. That has gotten better, but the car still hesitates when the throttle is floored from a stop. The dealer says they all do that. Do they?
My next nearest dealer is a lot farther away, but the trip might be worth it. Arrrrgh.
