STI oil changes......

Does anyone with an STI do there own oil changes?
I'm really close to buying a new 2006, and wonder how easy it is to do the
oil yourself.
For instance, is the oil filter easy to get to, or is it buried out of
sight?
Is synthetic the best or fossil?

Any info would help...............Thanx......CC

In the overall scheme of things, how bad would changing the oil have to
be to reject the car you otherwise want?

Soobs are average to above average in ease of filter/oil changing I'd
say. There is a plastic shield that on some models will need to be
removed. But the filter hangs straight down and is unobstructed. So very
little oil would ever run out of it.

Thank you Carl for the quick response.
The answers to my questions won't deter me from buying this car I've wanted
for over a year now.
But I like doing my own basic maintenance and only owned one car I
wouldn't/couldn't do an oil change on (95 Infiniti Q45).
I hated paying dealer prices for something I've been doing since 1984.

Anyway, after test driving an STI 10 months ago and reading all the glowing
reviews, I'll justify this as a mid-life crisis toy.

PS. Well another toy, still have a Honda VFR sport bike, and Kawasaki Jet
Ski.

I don't have an STI, but I do change the
oil on my wife's '04 WRX. There's a big
plastic shroud over the bottom of the engine
that is held in place with 5 bolts and 5 or
6 plastic button fasteners. Getting the
shroud on and off is the worst part. The
button fasteners get full of grit and don't
want to come out. After I get them out,
I take them apart, clean the dirt off of
them and put a tiny bit of silicon grease
on them.

The oil change itself is about as simple
as it can get. The oil filter drops straight
down with no exhaust or starter below it
and the drain plug is trivial to get to.

I have a 03 WRX, is that shroud different on a 04 ? It's not in the way of
changing my oil. There is a washer too on the drain plug you have to replace
every oil change.Not sure if the 06 STI still requires you to replace that
crush washer every time. The sub dealer gives me a couple for free when i
need them. I'd go with synthetic oil.

It must be because it's flat impossible to change
the oil and filter on an '04 without removing it.

As to the crush washer, always replace it. I keep
a bag of 20 or so hanging on the wall in the garage.

I buy my filters and washers 10 at a time from
Auburn Subaru up near Seattle. Great price and
service. I use Mobil1 10W30 all year round in
both the '99 Outback and the '04 WRX.

What do people think (besides the lack of stylesheets) of this webpage
I have concocted this morning:

for a scaled down STi wagon sans the helicopter blade advocacy to
compete with the upcoming EVO wagon (if it ever gets to the US).
If there is some interest maybe I can hook up this to PostgreSQL or
something
to store the votes and relay them to Subaru.

Did I miss anything? I don't know if STI frame is different (stiffer)
than the one on the pedestrian WRX. I think I got most of the important
differences down.

Be patient: it might get slow if too many people hit it at the same
time.
If that happens try it later.
Suggestions are welcome, but this is my first web design/programming
project
so it might be a while before I implement some of them.
