Hello everyone.
Attached is a picture of my air filter / intake system. Just after
the air filter but attached to the plumbing is an enclosed cylinder
type device. Does anyone know what it's function is and what is it
called?
Thank you for any responses.

Are you talking about the empty canister that is attatched so that it points
in the general direction of the firewall, on the the air intake just after
the MAF? I had one of those on my 89 GL Turbo wagon and I have one that is
curved but otherwise the same on my 93 Impreza. I have always wondered what
it was and what it did myself, so if that's what your question is, I'm all
ears too. (o; It seems entirely passive, just a plastic cylinder, but it
must serve some purpose or I imagine Subaru would not spend their money and
ours to engineer it into the air intake system.

Hi Brian,
The answers I received is that it is a type of impulse resonator. This
somehow give a more accurate picture to the MAF of what is going on in
the manifold and also contributes to slightly more power.
BTW I was pointing to the tube like structure about 1.5 inches in
diameter with a slight bend pointing toward the front of the car.
