I'm going to yank the engine out of my 94 Legacy and overhaul it. 100,000
miles, blown head gasket, still runs but overheats. I'm looking for specific
do's and don'ts, things to do, things to watch out for. I worked as a
mechanic for years, still have all my tools, and have been through several
engines (mazda, datsun, ford, mopar). What makes this overhaul job different
from any other 4 banger? Where am I likely to get into trouble?

Unless your having oil consumption; I'd just pull the heads and put new
gaskets on it; we do it all the tine at our shop

I agree. 100K isn't a lot of miles for a Subaru. The last time I took my
car in for service they had the engine out of an Outback and were putting
new head gaskets on it.

No place is better for info about keeping soobs running (especially
older soobs) Than www.usmb.net . Just do a few searches, read, then ask
specific questions and you will find very experienced/knowledgable folks
there.
