The check engine light (CEL) is on as well as the light on the cruise
control button. The cruise control button light flashes whether the
botton is pressed on not. This is the first time this has happened on
my 2004 Subaru Outback Sedan LTD with 60,400 miles. Any suggestion as
to what is wrong and a solution? Thanks.

Extract OBD diagnostic code for a starter.

Thank you Tony. I have a diagonstic device but I don't know where to
plug it in. On my older Subaru ('96) it had a door under the dash.
Where is the outlet on this model ('04 OB Sedan Ltd)? Thanks. Rich

Hi,
Almost same place. Under the driver side dash.

If the CEL is on, the cruise flashes and won't work no matter what is wrong,
until the code is cleared.
