I opened my Haynes repair manual - no such filter mentioned!
I am looking everywhere online for a diagram/instruction but no luck...
Anybody here knows how to replace cabin filter in '04 legacy outback?
I would appreciate any tips how to get the job done.
BTW - Is there a real repair manual for these cars from subaru available
somewhere online?
Thanks!

regular meaning base- no leather, eddie bauer crap etc. There's no
filter.

Thanks for clearing this up.
The car in question does not have leather seats.
Is there an easy way to confirm there is no filter using VIN or anything
else?
Assuming I have already purchased the filter, not knowing the car does not
have it, is it possible to put this filter in or the ventilation channels
are different in a version without a filter?
Is there a factory repair manual for these cars available for
general public? Something like this one for toyota camry:

If it's a Gen 4 car, the filter is behind the glovebox; you need to remove
the clips that hold the glovebox liner in and remove it, the filter is in a
tray near the top.
It's documented in my owner's handbook BTW.

Thanks Martin - what chapter of the manual are you referencing to?

You can probably dig up the diagram out of this Russian site:
http://subaru-car.ru/left/doc/art/
Manuals are in English.
If behind glove box, like my '03 Forester there are about 9 screws to
remove to detach glove box. I've had mine out twice and it's not a big
deal. New filters at Subaru dealership were over $50 so I just brushed
and washed my old one. If I decide to replace, I'll rebuild from a
furnace filter as $50 is highway robbery for the filter.

You could check with your local library. They might carry, for example,
http://www.epnet.com/ which has lots of databases, one of which is for
car maintenance diagrams. I forget the name of the automotive repair
database but the librarian should know. Because it's your public
library, it's free to access (but they have to pay a yearly access fee);
however, if you need to take the data with you then you usually have to
submit the page to the printer and then pay to get the printout.

If it is equipped with a filter (either as a standard feature or an
option) there may be a sticker placed on the 'end' or some other area of
the glove compartment or it's door mentioning it.
My 03 has two seperate pieces in plastic frames.
I think all the outback models are cabin filter 'capable' and indeed,
some folks make their own and install them. They are a little pricey
from the dealer, hownever there MAY be Purolator or other after-market
filters avaible now - dunno.
Also, there should be instructions at www.cars101.com .
