Anyone heard of a fuel pump AND the ECU dying simultaneously in a
subaru 2.5l engine?
Could a malfunctioning ECU somehow overdrive the fuel pump and burn it
out?
Conversely, could a bad fuel pump electrically damage the ECU?
Is it more likely that my mechanics blew the ECU while attempting to
diagnose the no-start?
Thanks!

Seems unlikely, but the ECU does control the fuel pump in some way, at least
by enabling a relay (mechanical or electronic) to switch the pump on. The
ECU may be fried, but why do you (or the mechanic) think the pump is fried
too? I'd suspect the ECU died and the mech swapped out the pump because it
wasn't running...
You should have the old pump. Apply 12v and see if it hums.

Very unlikely
Has your mechanic tested the crank position sensor?
My friend had a no start with an explorer. Mechanic replaced fuel pump
and was going to do the ECU next. I found the crank position sensor had
"aged" away from the sprocket thus killing the engine.
Good luck!
