Not German cars; they're solid. English cars, on the other hand, do
have this reputation.
Me, I'm a fan of a specific kind of Japanese car, and readers of this
newsgroup can probably guess which. ;)

Me too.
One of my sons had a German car, a Porsche Boxer. It cost $100 to
change the oil and could only be done by a guy named Horst ;)

<chuckle> But that doesn't imply a car that's unreliable or requires a
lot of maintenance, just one that is *expensive* to maintain, which is a
different matter. My former stepmother had a Porsche Boxer in the
1970s. I wasn't particularly impressed, but then I prefer cars that
show their mettle when driving conditions get bad, not cars that work
best on a racetrack. :-)

That son traded in his Boxer and BMW for an AWD Mercedes which also
performs well in bad weather.
Premium gas and lower mileage than Subaru is one of his regrets. For
cost of Mercedes, wife and I each have Foresters.

My husband and I drive a Forester as well. My vision has deteriorated
over the last few years, and while I'm still licensed to drive, I rarely
do any more. So we don't have two.
In its first few years of existence, the Mercedes "M" class was on an
exclusive Consumer Reports list of cars they recommended buyers not
accept as gifts, let alone purchase, because of the large number of
design and quality problems. <wry grin> For a few years in the late
1990s and early 2000s, the premium Mercedes brand deteriorated
significantly, as documented by many measures of car quality.
They've since apparently recovered their previous quality, but I've
never seen the point in paying extra for luxury cars anyway. You can
get comparable quality in a low-end Toyota or Honda (or these days,
Subaru) and the other luxury items never mattered to me.

I find that German cars, Audi, VW, Porsche, etc. have really well
designed & well built interiors. However, they are all a major pain in
the A$$ to work on, & quite expensive.

My '73 Volvo 1800ES (3 years old) was a handful, but it looked so cool
who cared?!
My '85 Jetta (Brand new) was a NIGHTMARE! That's when I said No More
European Cars!!!!
Now, where did I put the number for the guy with the '79 Porsche 928...
