i am a newbie and i just bought a 96 camry 6cyl with 110000 on the
clock, the used car dealer that i bought it off of says its has been
changed but the service record dont mention the timing belt changed
and the dealer cannot provide proof that its been changed.
if any1 can tell me or help me find out whether its an interference
or a non interference i?d appreciate it
thanx

Have someone look at the belt, what if it breaks when you are crossing a
RR track and a train is comming, well you get out fast, hope no kids are
on board. Or crossing a highway etc
Im serious , you get NO warning.

I was working in the front yard one day when a girl in a small red Dodge
turned the corner and just stopped. She tried to get the car to the curb but
was still sticking out it the street a little with a dead engine. Pushed the
car to the curb, then after pulling the little inspection plug out of the
timing belt cover found the belt hanging slack. Fortunately she was in a
residential area, as you say it could have been a lot worse.

Used car dealer said that, eh?
My '93 Camry V6 is a non-interference engine and, as far as I can tell,
the '96 Camry V6 is also a non-interference engine.
The following link has a link to a guide on just about all makes &
models. Beware, it's a pdf.
http://www.gates.com/brochure.cfm?brochure=981
It shows Camry V6's through 1997 as being non-interference.
That said, I'd check with a dealer or mechanic who knows something
about Toyotas to be sure.

Scary analogies aside, what I would do is replace the timing belt [and
you may as well do the water pump too]. That way you know without a
doubt.
I did this with my '93 when I bought it -- peace of mind is a wonderful
thing.
