Is there a way to turn OFF all headlight functions?
There are times when I don't want any headlights at all (such as
driving late around campsites, at drive-in movies, etc.).  I don't mind
the day-time driving lights, they are a good safety feature, but I'd
like to be able to turn them off occasionally.

His vehicle obviously has a photorelay which insists on putting on
headlights when the ambient light level decreases below a certain point.
There is no override possibe, save for altering the wiring.

As the older cars get junked, ALL cars will have lights on while driving
around campsites, drive-ins etc.. Get used to it.

Look around.  Fewer models are getting DRLs .... not more.

I don't think he has a problem with DRL's--he wants to defeat the "Automatic
headlights on when light level is low" feature.

Ok.  If you put tape over the Twilight Sensor eye, the headlights stay ON
(Night Mode) all the time.  So you headlights, side markers, tail-lights,
license plate light, and instrumentation lights are all ON.  In my case, the
fluorescent digital clock is DIMMED for this perceived nighttime operation.
This mode does *not* allow you to turn OFF the headlights.

Late model Camrys have a nice compromise.  OFF *Auto* Parking ON.  The Auto
position makes the DRL and Twilight Sentinel operational.

I assume you are wanting to disable the DRL's. There is a resistor or
connector behind the battery that when disconnected will disable them. I
can't give you any more specific info than that but if you will google I'm
sure you'll find it as it has been discussed in this ng several times in the
last couple years.

Thx,
Yes, I was referring to the DRL's.  I guess I should have been more
brutally specific.  Obviously, there are a lot of folks on the UseGroup
that think they sound like Jay Leno & get a bang out of reading their
own "cute" responses rather than any constructive help. Anyway, my
Avalon has a switch position to defeat the DRL's, but I purchased the
Camry used, and there isn't mention of any bypass or defeat in the
owner's manual.  I'll do some further searching as you suggested.
Thanks for the intelligent help.

I don't advocate doing this BUT Toyota, a long time ago, issued a service
bulletin on how to defeat the DRL's Google is your friend.

Good Grief!!!
You berated people in alt.auto.toyota for discussing DRL defeating and
now you are helping someone figure out how to do it?  What a
hypocrite...
P.S.  Your name still doesn't make any sense.

No matter what happens, someone will find a way to take it too

I'm not a hypocrite...PERSONALLY I think defeating safety devices is
idiotic, however if SOMEONE ELSE insists on it, they might as well do it in
the proper fashion, i.e. following the directions in the service bulletin.
My name doesn't HAVE to make any sense to anyone save me.

Your father defeated a 'safety device' ... are you happy or sad that he did?

Meanwhile, YOUR mother visited a large mental hospital, 9 months before your
birth, and did NOT use birth control.

To your chagrin (a word I chose carefully), I am thankful.

I'm not trying to be Jay Leno, but what does DRL have to do with...

"There are times when I don't want any headlights at all (such as
driving late around campsites, at drive-in movies, etc.)."

Sure sounds more like the 'automatic' headlight function to me,
unless they show drive-in movies during the day now.
