Driver's door window on the wife's '93 Camry made a "bang" sound, went
down and wouldn't go back up. I can hear the motor working when I
press the switch. Sounds like the regulator broke.
Where is the best type of place to get this repaired other than the
dealership? The two local ones aren't much.

Ya know, I have used a local auto glass place several times for rock
chips, etc. and was always amazed at their low prices, quick turnaround
and the fact that twice they fixed little things that I didn't ask them
to fix, and didn't charge me.

So, you might check around and see if a local glass shop will tackle it
for you. Mine did something similar for me a few years back and the
price was unbelieveable, and most important, it still works....

The best glass shop I've ever experienced has been Diamond Triump auto glass
on the net.  Mobil auto glass repair.

They have people like in every city, they come right out to your place and
fix your window etc and they are really great prices.

I've used them now 4 times and have been astounded at the price, service and
efficiancy.

Several years ago the regulator (no motor) was $90 --- with motor it would
have been $300.  Its a 1 hour job if you did it yourself - not sure what
book calls for.

Hi Mr. Skippy.  The same thing happented on my 94 camry.  I installed
the new regulator myself with little difficulty, although 2 people
make the job much easier.  The regulator is an all in one unit.  After
removing the door panel, you simply unbolt the window from the
regulator, then remove the regulator.  (only a few bolts each) The old
regulator is than removed form the motor.  A metal retaining plate
needs to have "fingers" bent out to remove it.  The new regulator just
pops into the motor housing, and a new metal retaining plate is popped
in place, and metal fingers bent inward to hold it in place Re
assembly is a reverse process.  The regulator assembly is very easy to
remove and replace.  It took me  and a friend just over one half hour
to do the entire jobif you are at all handy you can easily do the job
yourself and save a bundle of money  Cheers.  glennsmga@operamail.com

Many thanks for the instructive post and many thanks to the others who
responded. I ordered a regulator/motor combo and managed to get the
door panel off cleanly to take a look at what will be involved. As you
noted, it looks pretty straightforward. I guess I'll know quickly
after the part arrives.
Again, many thanks

If you hear the motor run - then you can get by with just the regulator part
and save $200!  If you ever thought about swapping out the crappy OEM paper
speakers do it at the same time.

Just to follow-up, the job is done. Ordered the motor/regulator combo
on Ebay  from DoctorAutoParts. $31.95 + $13.95 S&H to my door. Was a
bit leery of the low price, but the unit looks, at least
superficially, to be of equal quality to the Toyota unit that came
out. Ordered it Friday PM and arrived on the BBT Wednesday. Took about
an hour and a half working slowly and carefully so as not to bugger up
the door. Works great. That brings the total for non-maintenance
repairs in the twelve years since we bought  the car new to about an
even $100.

Again, thanks to all.
