Last night, my wife and I noticed the very distinct smell of somthing
electrical being "hot" in our 2005 Solara. Shortly thereafter, the
heated seat (driver's side) stopped warming. Putting two and two
together, we figured that was what we smelled... the seat heater
"burning" out.
Question: how would one ever figure out where the problem is, and, is
it something a guy could fix DYI? If not, what kind of $$$ are we
looking at here for a professional fix?
Thanks for any help you might have for me on this.

Unless you've spent the past two years driving, it ought to be under
warranty still. It's pretty obviously a short in the wiring that caused
it, but 'why' is the problem.
