1999 Camry CE. 163000 miles. Check engine light comes on when weather
changes. Last summer (2006) I had the oxygen sensor replaced
(California Emissions) . Really expensive ( I live in Maine). The
light started coming on again last fall. The repair shop tells me the
other oxygen sensor on the catalytic converter is gone. Another $300.
job. I ran some fuel line cleaner and the light went out. Then the
weather got really cold (Maine) and the light came on after Christmas
and remains on. What if anything can I do on my own to fix this or
must I have the other o sensor replaced?

I think oxygen sensors cost maybe 60$ and are easy to replace, at
least on my 91 they are. I would think a good mechanic could tell you
if its the sensor or converter.

Yeah, Calif spec (or maybe NY and MA) are kinda expensive.
First you should pull the code and see what the problem is. Oxygen
sensor failure is usually the result of something else not working
right (rich mixture, coolant and oil leaks into the stream, etc). Is
the valve clearance correct? Timing belt changed? Engined tuned up?
etc
So go to your local Autozone or other parts stores and have the OBD-II
code pulled for free. Post them here.
