The new Prius was released in fall of 2003, the newly redesigned
hatchback/liftback midsize CAR for the 2004 model year.

Are you perhaps thinking of the Lexus RX400H (hybrid RX330 SUV) which
will use the same HSD that the Prius uses?  The release date had been
pushed back, rumor has it to help divert needed parts to up Prius
production to shorten the wait lines, but the release date was just
announced as April 15, 2005, for the 2006 model year RX400H:

Toyota had announced in the past about the release of the RX400H's
cousin, a hybrid Highlander, to follow a few months or so behind the
Lexus cousin.  With a flash-enabled browser, go to:

Last Sunday the San Diego Prius Club had a good look inside and out at
the Lexus 400h, the next hybrid from Toyota. Impressive.

The Prius was developed to achieve minimal footprint on the environment,
and great performance(due to ICE augmented by high-torque electric
motors) was frosting on the cake. The 400h was developed to get great
performance (from the near-original 3.3L V6 plus THREE electric
motors!), and great economy is the bonus. It's a hot-rod that gets
nearly 30mpg.

We were told authoritatively that there is no SUV Prius in the wings.
