I was reading the trouble shooting section of my owner manual today and it said that dirty or incorrect tranny fluid could cause the shudder that mine is doing (Im thinking it was the tranny all along but dealer will not do anything untill it gets worse). I opened the hood and can not find a dipstick anywhere. I know where it was on my 2000 but could not find one or even where one could go at. On my 2000 it was on the right hand side a few inches away from firewall but there is not one on the 05 nor does the book show one anywhere? No dipstick. The '05 has the A750 transmission in which the ATF level gauge (dipstick) has been discontinued, and the ATF inspection method and the oil level inspection method have been changed. I have been a Toyota fan for a decade and a half but bit by bit (cheapening sheet metal, rattly plastic interiors, fly-by-wire throttles, and now no ATF dipstick), Toyota is falling out of favor with me. With regard to the ATF oil check/fill provision, LEAVE WELL ENOUGH ALONE. A dip stick and tube work fine have worked fine since automatic transmissions came into being. With regard to product cheapening ... aka "value engineering", I've already sent letters to Toyota both here in the US and Japan reminding them of how they got the reputation they have and also how they are losing it. Take this to the bank ... you don't want to get a 3 page letter from me on this subject. But not by the wide margin it used to be. Notice the things I listed are mostly body/interior issues. But the fly-by-wire throttle crap is the first objection I have to Toyota's electronic engine control foolishness. BUT ... there is one engine mechanical matter that I'm watching. MOST PEOPLE do not know that the current generation Corollas no longer have conventional valve seats. Aluminum head ... no pressed in valve seats. Instead, there is a coating process much like Nikasil cylinder coatings ... a process known as laser cladding for valve seats. This makes for a cylinder head whose seats cannot be reground in the unlikely event of a needed valve job. Now Toyotas needing valve jobs is not common but ... that was in the past. Anybody have 300-400k miles on a 2003 Corolla? Time will tell and the public is the ultimate test driver. snip > known as laser cladding for valve seats. Thanks for the replies, I had no idea there was no dipstick. Changing the fluid might not help but wanted to try. I have put he truck up for sell, not because of this problem but financial hardship recently encountered. I want whoever buys it to be very happy with it. Only problem is Ive always heard how Toyotas hold their value and I cant even get the payoff of 21000 out of it and this was what I was quoted 5 months ago for a base moldel no frills LWB Tundra and this is a loaded SR5 DC! > Thanks for the replies, I had no idea there was no dipstick. Is $21,000.00 the purchase price of a new version of your truck? If yes, where did you get the idea that you could sell it for that price? Toyotas *do* hold their value well, but nobody's going to pay the "new" price for a used vehicle. If you were talking about a collector's piece, like maybe a 1978 Porsche Carerra, it would be different. No, 21,000 was not near the purchase price. If there is a dealer anywhere that would sell a 05 Tundra for that price sure would like to have known about it this past July. Talked to the salesperson today that I bought it from and his best price on an 06 like mine was right at 29k even with the rebate. I took it in this morning to have the tranny fluid changed. They kept it all day and called at 5pm and told me they would have to order the fluid, did not have any for the 05,s. They drove my truck again (including the salesperson) and said what I was feeling was normal behavior for my model truck so I guess I will just have to live with it. Make me feel like a dumbazz. The newer Tundra automatic transmissions are like manuals. They have a fill plug in the side along with a drain plug in the bottom. BBTaco |
