I'm wondering what are the common issues that a Tundra truck owner
needs to know about. I'm sure there are repair records and databases,
but is this data available to the public?

Prepare to be really bored with the truck when it hits 239,000 miles,
nothing out of the ordinary has gone wrong with it, and you were looking for
a reason to buy something different after many years.

My 04 DC Tundra just hit 42 k boring, uneventful miles, and that makes me
very happy.

Yeah, but admit it. You really miss having your transmission drop dead at
59k because you didn't follow the GM--recommended service interval for
wiping the dust off the sun visors. :-)

No my transmissions worked OK, but as an example, I did have to have the
dealership change 3 injection pumps on my 95' 6.5 diesel in about 70k miles.
It sucks when the truck wont start or the engine dies while driving down the
street.
To be fair, GM did extend the warrantee on the pump to 120k, and they only
charged me a 100.00 deductible each time. That means that I " ONLY " had to
pay an extra 300.00 for their poor engineering.
That is a lot better than the " sharp stick in the eye " that they give most
of there other customers.
But I'm not bitter......
Like hell I'm not..........

on 2002 and earlier Tundras the brakes are crap. Toyota knows about
it, but won't do a recall.
The rotors warp early and often. The entire system was changed in 2003.
I had mine in 3 times under warranty and twice out of warranty. \
Check TundraSolutions.com and do a search. It is a nasty problem.
They seem to think that turning the rotors when I come in will make the
problem go away, but in reality, it makes me come in a little sooner
each time.

2000-2002...wear overdrive section--don't tow or haul heavy in
overdrive.
2000- early 2003...possible brake judder. Top quality aftermarket
brake pads help, as do the different model caliper in late 2003.
Differing transmission fluids depending on the year...

I think if you get a newer one, there's virtually nothing of
consequence that is a real "issue". I think the early ones had some
sort of brake thing, like the rotors would warp. My '06 just seems
like a damn fine machine... so far.
They are the best truck on the road.

Another thing is the rear end 'clunk'. My '03 4Runner does the same
thing, so it isn't just Tundras. It isn't damaging, but it is
annoying. Toyota said that it is "normal". That is Japenese for ~it
is a problem that we either don't know how to fix it, or it just isn't
worth our time.'~

My '05 Tundra is the best vehicle I've ever owned. I did have one fuel pump
issue when it was cold outside last year, but they replaced it under
warranty. TSB EG043-05
