The nylon tail of the antenna mast of my 97 4runner broke.  I have to
get the broken piece out of the motor.  I can't get the fender liner
out of the way because the fender flare is in the way.  How do I remove
the fender flare?  Is it a bad idea to try? Any advice is welcome.
Thanks.

Get some super glue on the end of your mast and turn your radio on. Wait
till the motor stops turning, cxlicking and farting about then stick in your
broken end with glue on it. It may take a few goes but you should be able to
lift the old piece out when the glue sets. Dont use to much as it may stick
to the side of the tube and then your stuffed, Ive done it this way before
and I got lucky second try.  All else fails just cut out the liner where the
flare is holding it and rescrew it back later.

If I remember correctly, I had to remove the fender flare to be able to
remove enough screws to move/fold the fender liner out of the way.  Then the
antenna motor removal was easy enough.

I don't know about the super glue trick.  If it works great but there was a
lot of grease inside the antenna motor and I'm not confident you can get to
the broken piece or have super glue stick to it.

By separate email I'm sending you the Toyota manual section on how to repair
the motor.  Watch for it.

Thanks to both of you.  I tried the glue first, but it didn't work.
So, I moved to Paul's advice.  It turns out that I didn't need to
remove the fender flare at all.  By removing the 3 clips on the fender
liner, I was able to peel back the fender liner enough to reach around
to remove the bolt holding the antenna assembly.  Then it was simple to
open the antenna motor and remove the broken piece.

The lesson learned was that I did not have to remove the portion of the
fender liner attached to the fender flare.  It was enough to just
remove the 3 clips and peal the liner back.  My initial thought that
I'd have to remove the fender flare was wrong.  Although I couldn't see
behind the peeled liner, I had enough space to get my hands back there
to remove the bolt holding the antenna assembly.

Thanks again.
