1996 Toyota Tacoma manual 4cyl 4x4.
Hey guys,
I've noticed a that a decent sized spot (2-3 inches across) of lubricant
is left in my driveway everyday after my truck has been parked over
night. I can usually look under and see a small collection of oil about
to drip from the skid plate protecting the transfer case. I checked my
Hayes manual and it suggests an oil seal leak. The repair doesn't look
that difficult. Basically I just wanted to get your expert opinions on
what I should do. Do you think it's the oil seal? I'm guessing that
the issue isn't extremely urgent as long as I keep oil in the transfer case.
Thanks for your help,
Dante

Find out what is leaking and repair it. If it is a seal leaking it is a
relatively easy repair. You would need to remove the driveshaft and then the
yoke at the TC, R+R the seal and put everthing back together. When you
remove the yoke from the transfer case remeber to mark the nut in relaton to
the shaft BEFORE you loosen it. When reinstalling the nut tighten it up till
the marks line up and you shouldn't have any problems.

Can't see it from here. Why not crawl underneath and take a look ?

If it is a leaking seal it will only get worse. Then you run the risk of
running it out of oil. Better to fix it now.

Thanks for the reply. I did take a look underneath and it's virtually
impossible to tell where it's coming from. Oil is all over the back of
the transfercase. Is it likely that it's coming out of another place
than the seal? Also, what do you mean by R + R the seal? (Remove and
replace?)
Why do I need to mark the position of the nut? Is it so that I don't
over tighten it?
Thanks for your help.

Hard to say without looking at it. The seal would be the most likely place
to leak.

Yes.

Yes.
