I need to change the headlight assembly on my 1997 4-Runner. Looking
at what I could. I see that I have to remove the front grill and
probably the piece under the headlight. How do you remove the clips
that hold the grill to the headlight assembly?
Thanks for any info as to how to remove the front grill and other
parts to change out the headlight assembly.

Assuming it is like my '98, the grill is not fastened to the
headlights.  You remove the grill by releasing the clips from the
front with a straight screwdriver.   Then it works better for me to
take the clips from the metal(1/4th turn?) and install them in the
removed grill, to reinstall. I don't know about the piece under the
headlight, but it is not part of the grill. Good luck, just be
cautious.

you also might try this site for info from those who have previously
sought the information you are looking for.
http://www.yotatech.com/f131/  It is an excellent resource for things
that "work" when it comes to knowing your Toy.  Also an optional
registration two years ago did not result in any email or spam.

I found what I needed at Yotatech. Here's a link for a series of
pictures and explanation of how to replace the headlight assembly.
Very useful.

it is an excellent resource for me, and I am glad it was of use
to you.  Also, invariably, there is a chance you may have damaged
one of the "grasshopper" plastic clips that hold parts together.
I have a shop about a mile from my house called Ahi-Winzer that
has several walls in the shop with nothing but fasteners of all
types for any make of vehicle mounted with part numbers under them.
Ahi-Winzer is located at 3860 S Seneca St in Wichita, KS 67217
(316) 524-2901.  You may find one of these independent stores in
your area where you can take a sample part and find what you need.
An example of that clip holding the grill on for my 93 toyota....
at the dealer they wanted almost 7 dollars for two of them.  At
that winzer store they were under a dollar with tax for those same
parts.
