I'm going to change leaking head gasket on 1986 22r with 156k miles .
Can I use the same head bolts? What kind of head gasket kit is best?
Thank you.

You can re-use the same head bolts if the head has never been off before,
the best head gasket kit is the one sold by Toyota dealers.

Buy new bolts. You can use the old ones, but if the leaking has led to
overheating then new ones are better.

Toyota or HKS are good. Felpro if the car (or truck...) is being rebuilt
on a budget to get through the next winter or two...

Ya know, I wish people would realise how much they're wasting by
re-using torqued bolts.  Both in re-repairs and compression loss.

HKS! HKS! HKS!

LOL! Well, that's the best fix for the 7M-GE and the 7M-GTE, but the 22R
wasn't as prone to throwing the damn things as the Supra/Cressida!!

And as far as new bolts, I'm with you there! If you're going to go to all
the trouble of tearing the engine down, do it right!!!

OEM

I would check the head real close for signs of wear at the points were the coolant passages
make sharp turns.  I know it sounds weird but around here its so common the dealer seemed
to think it was typical for the engine in a heavy C&C truck.

Thing just sprung a tiny leak near  the exhaust port were the heads all smooth. JB weld fixed it
for about 6 months until it sprung a new leak that was in the exhaust port.(just like the toy tech said it would)

Oh and It was not a lack of maintenance, but I'm sure 200,000 miles of maxi-RPM and the hard water here
had allot to do with it because I see commercial/industrial liquid pump housings wear thru also at work.
