I bet THAT was exciting!

Kinda reminds me of a friend of mine who hit a MOOSE while riding his
Harley. He rode under in a similar way; the motorcycle windshield
eviscerated the moose; the moose died; he walked away mostly
unscathed.

He still rides the Harley (after making some repairs) and we call him
"Moose Killer".

Yeah, right. Come ON up here, Nat, we'll show you cold weather and HOW to
stay warm. Save the "fwap": Mrs. Sharx doesn't do threesomes.

You wish.

I'd still rather shiver than sweat any day.

Yep. Nice, dry skin vs. all hot & sticky.  I hate it when you put your arm
on a desk, only to inadvertently pick up a paper that was lying there when
taking the arm back off the desk.  Yech.  Even if just had a shower, feel
all grungy.

If it's cold you can always add layers of clothing, but you can only take so
much off before getting arrested for indecent exposure. And could *still* be
sweating anyway...

OTOH, I love the freedom of wearing a tee & shorts & sandals in the summer,
and being able to just walk in & out of the house without having to make a
production of the deal: boots, coat (w/hood), gloves... then leave the boots
where they can drip dry (& dry up any snow puddles accidentally tracked in),
put the gloves where they'll dry off nicely...

Makes me really cranky too...

I didn't mind that at all.  Of course, I grew up in Florida, so it was still
novel for me, the 11 years we lived in New Hampshire.  We used to put our
boots, etc. on top of the wood stove.

Me, too.  And if extremely hot & humid, also lethargic.

I've always lived in the NE, so the novelty of that part of winter wore off
for me many years ago.  ;-)

You can have all the cold weather you want.  Last month it was 50, this
month, this is the first day the overnight temp didn't dip below 0.

Hello Don,

Would you be so kind as to fix your signature delimiter please.  Yours
is dashdashenter, it should be dashdashspaceenter.  This has the effect
of preventing newsreaders from stripping it when replying to your
posts.  As an example compare yours to mine.  Thanks.

Just how could that car knock the truck the 70 feet listed in the artical ?

@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

McDougald said the traffic light had turned green and he was starting to
move when he felt the car hit.
Sessoms said the impact knocked the tractor-trailer about 70 feet.

I wondered about that too!  You'd think it would feel like a speed bump to
the semi. Maybe it was cuz the semi driver was skidding on the Miata?

If the Toyota Camry wasn't going so slow and had moved over to the
right lane while speaking on the cell phone the Miata driver would have
been on his merry way instead of ending up the rear end of a semi.

I'm surprised that the ICC bumper on the trailer didn't prevent the Miata
from submarining!

That Miata driver came really close to doing a Jayne Mansfield.  I'm sure
the fact that the car was so low-slung saved his life.

The ICC bumpers on the back of semi-trailers
http://www.supremeind.com/g/dry_freight/vanbodies/Large/c.jpg
are designed to reduce the chances of a vehicle submarining.  I wonder if
the Miata hit hard enough to bend or break the ICC bumper, or if the bumper
ended up going over the Miata's hood.  That driver is probably looking at a
Humvee for his next ride!

But wouldn't he be dead if he had been in a high-mounted vehicle?

I think the accident with the Miata is one of those rare instances where
luck plays a big part, like when someone who is not wearing a seatbelt gets
ejected from the car just before it goes over Niagara Falls and would have
died if they had been belted in.

The front ends of cars have crumple zones that are designed to protect the
occupants, and in a higher vehicle, the crumple zone would probably have
come into play.  In the case of the Miata in the picture, there is no
crumpling.  If the Miata had a passenger or if the driver had hit the truck
a little more squarely, the likelihood that he would have survived looks
pretty slim.

Like I said - luckier than he is smart...

that happened less than a block from my office, BTW.  Most of the medical
offices are in that periphery.
