I recently bought a 2007 RAV4 and, to make a long story short, decided
to put up a website to help people buy cars.  The focus of the site is
not to sell anything, but rather to provide useful information to
anyone about to buy a car.  Hopefully it will help people save time &
money and avoid getting scammed.

At this point, the site is just getting started so I need input on
what people are interested in.  There's a survey at http://
surveys.zdecisions.com, and I would be most appreciative if you would
take a few minutes and complete the survey.

Thanks very much!

Well, I'm not planning to buy a car anytime soon, but I had shopping of any
kind (against my DNA, I know), so no, I didn't like it.  It's a necessary
evil.

Buying my husband's Scion was cool.  None of that "Let me talk to my
manager" negotiation BS.

Isn't that a good feeling?

We got to experience that twice with Arlyn Ness, the guy who sold us
both our xB and our Camry, because Arlyn works at Toyota of Rochester
(MN) and they have a one-price policy for ALL the cars they sell.

His job was to make us satisfied customers. The discounted prices were
clearly marked on all the cars, and what he needed to do was find out
from us what we wanted and then find the right car for us; a LOT
easier and less pressure than any other car negotiation either my wife
or I had ever experienced before.

Since buying from Arlyn, I've referred several folks to the
dealership, including my daughter who bought a Corolla from them (I
couldn't talk her into an xB ;^) and my son has actually joined the
company, working there as a mechanic.

So it's always fun for me to drop in there -- to buy something, for
service on a vehicle, or just to chat -- 'cause I get treated like
family!

Well, at least xBox love isn't genetic...

I'm curious - what do they do for pricing trade in value and  dealer

We didn't trade - we sold the previous car to my mom.  (giving Hachi and Roy
some tissues)

They were great with the options, though.  I liked how it was laid out very
clearly for us.

I saw an FX 16 on the road yesterday, it appeared to be in very good shape.
It was the regular (not GTS) version, and a mini-Gremlin came to mind ;-)

Oh, you poor thing.  That car was the second "Pregnant Roller Skate" - the
Bug was the first.  My Echo has been labeled that as well.

Hey, that was one of the coolest cars I ever owned (right up there with
the Corvair Van).  I loved that thing.  It was fast off of the line,
reliable, and held 23 people while moving 3 feet one day.

Oh, yeah...I had a regular Corvair, and my roomate had a Pacer. Talk about
a fun car! Slide the seats forward, pull out the headrests, and then
recline the front seats all the way down...

There is a Pacer that lives a few houses away from me.  Has a big flower
pasted onto the hood.  See, I am a pretty big AMC fan, from having the
Gremlin and my grandparents having their 'Grambler'.  I always liked their
styles, including the Javelin.. You know that the DeLorean is built on a
Javelin frame...

You sure? Wait...you don't mean DeLorean, you mean the BRICKLIN! Yeah, it
was. Had the 390 and everything. I actually got to drive one once a long
time ago. It was fun, but cramped getting in and out.

I 'looked' at a Gremlin when I bought my '78 Corolla 1200. If it hadn't
had such an "Old Man" interior, I moght have bought one! (The Toyota
dealer also sold AMC...my Dad bought a Rambler wagon there in '62, and we
have bought 4 Toyotas there!)

Argh, It was the Bricklin, not the DeLorean.  Sorry about that.  The
DeLorean was built on a Lotus Esprit frame.  Actually, now that I read up
on it again (for the first time since the 70's), they only used the AMC
360 engine (and later on the Ford 351).  It says nothing about a Javelin
underbody.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bricklin_automobile    Another
long held belief shot to hell....

The Pacer was a package of mixed signals. It was supposed to be thrifty
and fuel-efficient for its time, but those oversized expanses of glass
weighed more than the steel they replaced.

And yes, returning to the thread, I did like buying my Prius. It was a
smooth, low-pressure experience. In August 2005 we paid list for a car
on the lot. Shortly thereafter gas prices shot up and there was a queue
of people paying $1K over list.

You had a Corvair Van? Those things were cool! I had a regular 1969 Chevy
108 (Long wheelbase) like a bus...you sat over the front tire...

Yep, a 1964.  The thing was that I could not keep it on the road.  It did
not have the original engine and it kept on snapping clutch shafts, so it
had to move on to someone more mechanical than I was at the time.  It was
very cool tho, the driver sat over the front wheels on that too, with the
pedals pressing straight down.  There is one on a commercial now on TV, a
red one just like mine was.  The commercial has something to do with guys
traveling around to all the hockey games or something like that, might be
a local one.

That's it - the Puck Heads.  Every time I see it too I point it out to the
kids who then give me THAT LOOK again....

HAHAHAHA!!! They just don't know how COOL vans were!

I remember in 1972 a friend's uncle had a Chevy C-20 van, he was a
carpenter and had racks built into it. We were both 13 or 14 and were
'playing in a band', and I looked at it and said, this is COOL!!! My
friend asked me if I was nuts, and I said, Think of what you could do with
this!!! Especially for hauling around the equipment!

As usual...ahead of my time...

Now, if I could just get RICH on some of these ideas!!!  ;)

We go by Edward's, NADA or Kelly Blue Book. NADA is fairly neutral, Kelly
tends to favor the seller.

Should I have told you this? Uh...oh...

But then, I don't sell cars anymore, so what do I care!

So, you know, if they pull out a NADA book, you're going to get a fair
shake. If they pull out a Kelly...

And I bought a used Scion tC in September, and the car was valued
$1200-1400 less than a new one, but $3000 less than Kelly's price for a
used one, and $1000 less than NADA, so I think I got a good deal. I didn't
even haggle the price, because it was what I was looking for at exactly
the price I was looking for. Should have pushed them for the floor mats,
though...

I like buying the cars (Toyotas), but I don't like the *process* of buying a
car.  Except it does make me feel good in the end, since I never give the
salesperson what they wanted (MSRP, or anything near it), yet get what I
want - both in terms of the car & thew cost.

I always go in armed - knowing exactly which model, trim level, & options I
want, along w/ the dealer cost for the basic vehicle & for each option.  It
usually takes three sessions, with me walking out the first two times, then
the salesperson finally coming to grips with the fact that if he wants to
make a sale, that he's going to have to come *way* down in price (to ~$200 -
400 over dealer cost).  Otherwise, he realizes I'm going to walk, yet again.
