Oil Pump priming

In the '06 Camry LE, there are 4 ignition key positions: Lock, ACC,
On, and Start.

I was just wondering if the oil pump begins circulating oil through
the engine
when the key is in the On position, which comes before the Start
position.  If so,
one might want to hold the key in the On position for a few seconds
before going
onto the Start position--but only if On allows for oil to circulate
through the
engine before the engine actually starts.  Thanks.

that is probably the electric fuel pump

You have a mechanical pump that turns due to rotation of the motor itself.
There is no benefit to turning the ignition to ON, then waiting for the oil
pump to spin up. The pump does not spin in this condition.

As others have mentioned, you won't have any oil pressure until the
engine is running.
Pressure builds first in the main bearings, then pumped upward through
the engine.
There are some devices you could install that hold pressure when the
engine is off.
The idea is that much of the wear in an engine occurs during the first
seconds when oil pressure is building.
On my lawn mower, I always pull the cord three times, then prime and
start to allow the oil to circulate.
In the Camry, I use Mobil 1 synthetic with Lucas synthetic oil
stabilizer (20%) and it clings to engine parts to avoid dry starts,
however, many people have gotten several hundreds of thousands of
miles from their Toyotas simply using conventional motor oil changed
at 3,000 mile intervals.
The newer multi weight oils are lighter viscosity when cold to flow
through the engine more quickly.

As some mentioned, the pump is mechanical, and does not pump
until the engine is running.
But there is one trick I do on my yota when I change the oil..
This is one thing the immobilizer is actually useful for...
Last time when I changed my oil and filter, I cranked the engine a
few
times with a non-transponder key, and primed the system.
It seemed to work.. When I started up, the oil light was instantly
off, and I heard no "dry start" valve noise at all..   :/
About the same principal as using a drill motor to prime the oil
system on a new rebuild..

Some cars are beginning to be equipped with electric supplemental oil
pumps. These can prime the engines before starting. But most cars
today, like the Camry, still use the older mechanical driven pumps
tied to RPMs that do not generate more than 4-8 PSI during idle.

This thread reminds me of when we lived in North Dakato (C-O-L-D).
Everyone up there uses engine heaters to keep everything nice and warm
and flowing well. I learned that when I first got there and tried to
start my Camry in the morning. Rrrrrr  rrrrr  bang bang bang.

Well, it is just as cold here in Alberta as it is in North Dakota and I have only plugged my 99 Camry 6
cyl. in once or twice in 8 years. Why? I use syn oil which puts hardly no drag on the starter even when
the car has sat all night at -40.

You live in Alberta, no wonder you sometimes have an atitude!!  I'll
have to cut you more slack in the future. ;-)

I'll bet you keep your car in top shape also, good battery, tuned up,
good plug wires (if it uses them), all your routine maintenance up to
date, etc.

My company trucks always sat outside, my garage was for my cars, and
the company wouldn't spring for syn oil.  They never failed to start
even at -25 (it doesn't get as cold here in NW Ohio as in Alberta).
The only problem I ever had was once at about 0 degrees when I was too
busy to get a bad battery replaced.

Well, I was born here and have lived here...in Alberta for over 61 years. Are we Albertans known as the
Texans of Canada? Don't forget that Ohio gets some its petroleum from here!!!!!  Now, where's that
valve???

But of course, doesn't EVERYone in this ng?
