Heh.  I just made a somewhat similar comment.

I was first thinking: PT cruiser combined w/an xB.  But next thought was
"kitchen appliance".

I like some of the Ford trucks from the 50s, but I don't think I've seen the
Studebaker ones.

But you're right about this being a whole new breed of ugly.  People think
my Echo is ugly (I think it's so homely, it's cute), but this thing totally
makes the Aztek look acceptable.

Nah - the Aztek (how they spell it, by the way), is shockingly ugly when you
first see it.  That one looks pretty similar to other vehicles I've seen.
The rear end doesn't look incomplete, like the Aztek

Like I said, the picture is too flattering.  The back end in
particular, and in person, is what screams "Aztec".

I've often been disappointed in the looks of a car in person after
having seen photos.

One perfect example:  The E90 BMW, better known as the newest
incarnation of the 328i and 330i four-door sedan.  I had pre-ordered
one and cancelled right after seeing it in real-life.  The two-door
coupe you can learn to like, but it's the only newer model that I'd
consider owning, which is why my search continues for an earlier M3.
I've got the cash ready, but am having to be patient to find one with
low enough miles on the odo.

BMW's current designer, Chris Bangle, has almost single-handedly
destroyed the classic BMW look.  The large back ends, known among true
enthusiasts as "Bangle-Butts", are reminiscent of all too many Japanese
vehicles now trying to emulate the BMW in looks, though still failing
in performance and handling.  He's arrogant beyond belief and tolerates
no one questioning his judgement in design.

Take a look at the next 5,6, or 7 series you see that's 2004 or newer.
Note the overly-large trunk lid, upswept tail lights, etc.  Way out of
proportion, yet not so easily noticed in photos.  Same thing with the
Kia.

Oh, me too!  But the Aztek was irretrievably ugly, no matter how I saw it,
real or a photo.  I don't get that sense of abject horror from the KIA you
showed us.

Sounds like some doctors I've worked with.  But you think BMWs handle better
than *any* Toyota/Lexus?

Something under 70K.  I've looked at two or three, but often they've
been excessively modified, letting me know that the young owner has
beaten the piss out of it.  Smoking at 70K means hard use.  Like I
said, I'll be patient.

Sounds like some doctors I've worked with.  But you think BMWs handle

My wife's 330i convertible with the performance package will outhandle
ANY Lexus.  I've driven them all.  The closest was the IS300, but it
just didn't make it.

There's a reason that all of the car magazines use a 3 series BMW as a
standard by which to measure handling.

No, I mean all of them.  I passed on buying a used BMW from a guy who needed
to sell it quickly, as he was going overseas.  It was a 1980.  Dull beyond
belief, IMO.

That goes a way back.  I like mid-eighties M6s.  Very classic.

Whew!  I think that if any neighbor of mine bought such a thing as the
Toyota truck, I'd be tempted to spray paint ugly threats on his garage door
in the dead of night.

It's a good things that it's a "concept" car, which means that the
production model will look nothing like it.

It makes the Aztek look almost cute by comparison.
Speaking of the late unlamented Aztek, I recall well when it was introduced
with commercials during the first incarnation of "Survivor", when the tag
line was "Arguably the most versatile vehicle on the planet"....
and I used to mutter "And unquestionably the ugliest on the planet".

LOL!  My sister-in-law and her husband are part of a condo co-op in Florida;
they also share the vehicle, which was chosen by the group - they chose the
Part-Time Cruiser, much to my in-laws' Toyota-loving chagrin.  I rode in it
a couple of times while we visited.  TERRIBLE ride!  The interior is quite
awkward, as well, IMO.

The overall design was a joint venture between Toyota and Yamaha, but I
think the body design was by a Toyota designer.

Well looks are definitely in the eye of the beholder. I can't argue agains
some of the Supras and some of the Celicas were "stylish" - but come on a
Crown?  It looked like a mid-60s Chevy II with extra crap tacked on to make
it even uglier. And although the last version Cressidas were just plain, the
earlier ones were just plain duill. Maybe they weren't ugly, but claiming
they were "stylish" is pushing things.

That's true.  The first time I ever read the acronym was in a Stephen
Coonts novel, many years ago.

There just didn't seem to be a better description of the KIA.  Truly ugly.

But some people think the A-10 Warthog is as well.  I think it's beautiful.

The vehicles depicted in Natalie and Hachi's links are not the same.  Note
the different grille and headlights.  The one in Natalie's link is pretty
ugly, the one in Hachi's has potential with some changes.

It looks like a squashed Honda Ridgeline with a Tundra grill welled onto the
front. I'll bet the sightlines out of that thing are horrendous....

Speaking of bats:

The bat-faced upmarket family hauler can seat up to eight people while
casting a shadow smaller than that of the American-market Sienna.
