I was wondering when was the time as recommended by Toyota to change the timing belt of a 1988 Toyota
Camry? I know it's up to 60K mileage but is there a year time limit -- like every four years or such?  Just
curious. Thanks!

I believe it's 5yr/60K miles and after 1997 it's 6yr/90K miles. The
difference is Toyota assumed 12K miles per year or 15K miles per year.
But the post 97 5SFE timing belt stretched like crazy and a TSB was
issued for a revised belt and tensioner spring. So 5yr/60K is still
the best bet. I'd recommend Gates timing component kits.

Of course, some people go 10 years 200K miles on the original belt.
The point is "preventative maintenance", so we're not talking about
those.

5 years or 60,000 miles, whichever occurs first.

When I get my 1998 Toyota Avalon's timing belt and water pump changed later this week, I will ask Toyota for
the old timing belt back. What would a timing belt in either good or bad shape look like?
Thank you for any information you can give.

Happy New Year,

The old timing belt will be stretched more than a new one, although the
difference may be difficult to see without comparing an old and a new one.
Also, the lettering on the flat side of the old one will be worn.  If the
old timing belt is in poor shape, you may see wear on the belt teeth, cracks
and divots missing, and glazing.
