Turkey eases ban on headscarves

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/7236128.stm

The headscarf issue provokes strong reactions on both sides
Turkey's parliament has approved two constitutional amendments
easing the ban on women wearing Islamic headscarves in universities.

Every 15 minutes we were reminded of this. Sometimes they would comment
for 15 minutes, and then remind us again!

This was the lead story of every news report every half hour.

Slow news day?

How about in a hospital setting?  Shortly before my mother's death, I
saw two Muslim nurses wearing their scarves go from room to room.  They
changed outer disposabel gown-garments and masks due to MRSA, but that
same scarf was in the presence of every patient.

Either we are 21st century Western nations or we are mired in
religious bull-crap.  I say no scarves, no veils, no silly-a.s floor-
length muumuus.  Any woman who doesn't want their face visible in
public should join a cloister.

This is why those of us out here have such a strong fear and disloke
of anything religious.  If we accommodate christians then we will
accommodate muslims.  It really is that simple.

Governments, schools, et al should be non religious (unless it's something
like Elms College, of course...) but...

there are certain holidays recognized by governments that are religious,
obviously. Christmas is a Federal holiday, and as such doesn't really fall
into the Religious category (you can celebrate Christmas without being a
Christian).

It's the bending over backwards to accomodate religion that irritates me.
I guess if the women want to wear head scarves, then by all means they
should be allowed to do so, but there were some attending schools wearing
hats and wigs that covered their heads.

But the real irritating factor to me wqas the amount of time devoted by
the BBC to the topic. They treated it like it was a major news story, when
it's a 2nd or 3rd page blurb at best.

Know how many Muslims live in the UK?   Bingo, there's your reason.
