I was just fantasizing and playing around with the mileage slider at the
Toyota site and came up with 2 choices for 35+ MPG, of course the Prius
and the Yaris.

Never heard of that one, is it a new model?

Not a hybrid? But still gets 35 MPG?

It is a smaller car that has been sold in Europe and Asia for a few years.
Here it is an Echo replacement, but it was built concurrent with the Echo
for a few years.

They have a sedan and a hatchback. It is basically a Tercel with a smaller
body.

I think the sedan is OK, the hatch is a little quirky looking, but I like
quirky looking Jap cars. It is also made in Japan, which is a plus for me.

Depending on driving habits, you may get more MPG.

Did your grandfather call the Japanese "Japs"?   It is, and has always been,
a pejorative, and offensive.

How come?

Sounds like just an abbreviation for Japan.

Why do people get offended by everything nowdays?

I heard that "negro" is offensive, yet they have the "United Negro
College Fund" and "negro" only means "black" in latin. Yet we can call
people "black people", so why is "negro" offensive.

Why do people get offended by everything nowdays?
Mike hunt - 22 May 2008 23:33 GMT
During the war everybody use the term Japs when reffering to the Japanese.
Negro always had a negative conation, but Black, like White, is descriptive.
It was the southern slovenly pronunciation of Negro that led to us being
know as niggers, in any event

The hatchback is quirky looking. For hatchbacks I would prefer the "fit."
The sedan looks like a normal car. Maybe rivals that of the focus but with
better mileage...

I've been digging a little more on the web, and it looks like nothing
really beats a Prius.

That "Smart Car" looked like it was sized down to where it could get
really good mileage but I read a review saying not so, and it aint so
hot either. Like a smaller car that doesn't get much better MPG, and
doesn't seem to do other things well either.

It's just that I might be able to afford $13k but not double that for a
Prius.

AND I was looking at a Consumer Reports bubble chart in the store that
appeared to be saying that the Prius gets its lowest rating for safety?
Is that so?

It's just that these gas prices are killing us, even with the 25 MPG
that the DX wagon gets.

Don't be drawn into the idea that bigger is better unless its your
boyfriend, Sarah. We, as a nation, need to downsize.

We need to make sure folks like Mike are not scared by all the big vehicles
on the road, because there will ultimately be fewer.

I'm not a big fan of the Prius. Yeah, it's neat, and the technology is
bleeding-edge, but you also have 2 motors that can break rather than one,
and I think the fix for the electric motor is to replace rather than
repair.

One came in with some kind of battery issue, and we had to strip the
interior out to get to the battery and connections; the car was in the
shop for four days.

Personally, I can't see spending >$20,000 for a car that size, when I was

*AVERAGE!!!*

> What year?

1995. I was working at a used car dealer in 2001 and took it in trade for
a purple Escort! (She liked the color...)

It sat for a week, and when I decided to buy it some guy came in and
offered $2800 for it(I got it for $1400)...tough decision, but I was just
finishing up the installation of the Killer Stereo!  ;)

I drove it three uears and sold it to buy my 18 MPG Supra (!)
I don't regret it when the sun is shining and the roof is open...

But that was an overall average, combination of 'city' and highway
driving. I live in a rural area and rarely drive <40 MPH.

I also only ran the car on Premium! I started it with 89 Octane and was
getting ~38 MPG. I switched to Premium (93 Octane) and it went up to 42
MPG, consistantly.

I put one of these on it...

and it went to 44-45 MPG consistantly

Averaging  42 MPG.  What is a Tercel, a two cylinder motorcycle?   ;)

To tell you the truth, I have no idea how I did so well. It was a 1.5
liter underpowered machine (although it had ~110 HP, only 2 less than my
Hachiroku) I put the biggest tires that would fit on the stock rims, and
drove the hell out of it!

I checked the speedometer against one of those signs they put out saying
"Your speed is..." It was within 1 mph.

I also had it 'officially' checked once. "You were doing 65 in a 50, but
since the car is new to you, please take it easy until your used to the
car!"

The car came with 155/80-13's and I put 185/60-13's on it. I ran out of
engine long before I ran out of grip.

I did a spreadsheet with the data from my "Little Black Book" I keep in
the glovebox. Every fillup I check the MPG and write it down. That way I
have an average of what the car is doing and can spot trouble as it
develops, instead of after...

Over the course of three years I was tracking the price of 87 and of 93
octane, plugged the numbers into a spreadsheet, and came to the
conclusion I actually *saved* $220 by using premium, thanks to the
increase in MPG.

Your mileage may vary...

I own one. I like it. Even though I am 6'2, I manage to fit into it. I wish
the steering wheel was telescopic, but it is a fine car and gets you great
mileage. The Prius is twice the cost, but is also a worthy vehicle if you
can afford it.

What are "a relative few dollars?" What is "a few dollars?" $20 a week
($1000 per year)? That sounds like more than a few to me. Maybe we all
didn't get rich by predatory dealer practices.

Is one just saving money? And, isn't the price of the Yaris less than
say a Ford F150? Please provide evidence that these vehicles are less
safe than other vehicles.

Safety isn't a car, safety is a system.

A car in and of itself has no safety.  A car with a driver..now, that's
different.

Speaking of, and totally off topic, I was reading the other day that store
front accidents involving elderly drivers happen around 1,000 times a year.

Reviews usually mean squat. As always, it is an economy car. In other words,
you get what you pay for. With that said, that's why you test drive it
first. I personally appreciate the gas savings.

I'm not bitter.   (Okay, I'm a bit bitter about GWB & his administration!)
But I do get annoyed when you post your own guesses as answers, & those
guesses aren't based on facts.  And therefore they're simply your own skewed
opinions.  Ex: Dimensions of cars don't lend themselves well to mere
opinion - there are hard facts to go by.

And why throw in Hillary there, when we were talking about the Prius car?
Because you assume that's who I'm voting for - solely because I'm female,
that I'd be upset about any gaffes she makes, & that she's is not the

I used to LIKE women, till I figured out all the single ones that would date
me fell into the exact same pattern and that I was just wasting my time
trying to find a real conservative among the singles.   I know a lot of
married women that I get along with real well.  But there are no single ones
that think the same way, they've all been poisoned in their minds by Betty
Fredan or Gertrude Stein or someone else on the Left.  That's why most of
them are STILL SINGLE.

I'm sitting here in a sweat top with a hood in my apartment.  The fool idiot
owner turned on the AIR CONDITIONING this week, so of course there's no heat
and the nighttime temps have been below 45.   Guess I'll have to bake some
bread to heat up the house tomorrow, I'm not going anywhere with gas at
4.25.  (I crossed the county line and got gas at 4.09 today, took 45 bucks
to fill up a COROLLA with its 50 liter tank.)    Going to have to throw the
winter blankets back on the bed.

Did I mention it's 45 again this morning with the wind out of the north?
And the AIR CONDITIONING is ON.  (I turned my unit off, but there's no way
of calling up heat!)  If it gets too much colder in here I'm going to have
to break out my winter coat.  Catching Pee-numonia on Memorial Day Weekend.
Sheesh.

BTW, that's Fahrenheit, not Celsius.   This is the coldest Memorial Day I
remember.  It should be bikini weather.  It's not going to be any fun to go
watch the girls on North St Beach.  Maybe, since it's such a cold day here
in Hell, the Cubs might actually win the World Series for the first time in
100 years.

I've been trying to get the boss to send me down to Florida, but now he's
back from Florida.  Trade you, but then where you're at would probably get
cold and Chicago would probably get HOT again.

Hmmm, wonder if we're going to repeat 1816, the year without a summer?

Yes but with the air temp below 70 and the water temperature at 55, no
female in her right mind is going to wear a bikini this weekend.  Even the
fashionistas aren't that crazy.  Even the boy crazy girls aren't that
desperate.   Were I thinking about going in the water, I'd wear a wetsuit.
I don't even think anyone could talk Horseface Parker into wearing one up
here this weekend, even if her husband promised to be there and ogle her.

Besides, I'd never wax.  My sister has promised me that if I ever try
waxing, she has dibs on the job.  And she's promised to make it HURT.   She
was shocked enough that I shaved my legs after the bypass.  But I got so
tired of looking at legs that had black hair on one side and brown on the
other.

The hair on my legs wasn't even dark enough to see until I was near 30.  I'm
pretty nearly a hairless wonder from the neck down.  I've got a little more
hair since they shaved my chest and other things for the bypass, but still
not a whole lot.   Why do you think decent women are not interested in me?
I'm not manly enough.   So I have given up.

It's still only 67 today.

That didn't even work on the short bus when I was going to school.  I was
'friends' with all the cheerleaders in high school, because they had
evaluated that I, like the planet Earth in the Hitchhiker's Guide, was
mostly harmless.

Don't knock the surrogate siblings!  I had plenty of close platonic male
friends when I was a teenager (I still do, as a matter of fact). Sometimes
we females need to talk to a guy who isn't our significant other.  We need
the male point of view from a guy we can trust (which is what I think is the
reason straight women love the company of gay men in particular; no
pressure - and they're funny as hell!)  I think my teen years would have
been *way* more difficult without my "brothers."  I have biological
brothers, but it's not the same.

Conversely, guys have always told me I'm easy to talk to, when they want a
female point of view.  They know I'll at least *try* to listen to them
without any preconceived notions.

Any relationship can be very meaningful, with or *without* romance.

I have a lot of female friends, unfortunately all of them are married.  Even
the cheerleaders from high school got married to someone else.  At 50, I'm
permanently alone and giving up on life.  I've been trying for most of the
last 40 years to change that, and it's useless.   There is no change for me.
Why do people think that if I can't effect change in the last 40 or so
years, that automagically I'm going to be able to change things in the next
10?  The only changes I've seen in the last 40 years are steadily worsening
changes.  Nothing for the better.  I don't even have a 'happy place' to go
to when the dentist gasses me anymore.

Then I've been 'severely depressed' most of the time since I was 6, which is

Sounds like you're basing your happiness on what other people think.
That is a recepie for failure. I could give a god damn what other people
think.

At 27, I was stuck in a dead end situation in NE pennsylvaia (cold
winters). I was turned down for the PA state police in spite of the fact
I was on the top of the list phisically and intellectually. Politics
over rode all of that.

In spite of being divorced and  having children in NEPA, I decided to
move to Florida to see what opportunites I could find. I ended up
starting my own business (20 years old now) and buying a summer home in
northeast Pa...

Over those 20 years I traded one hot sexy 18-23 Y.O. in for another when
I got bored with them. Now I've reached the point where I want more than
sex with a female  who has a bad attitude and a hot body..

I know there are good, subserviant AND sexy  females   in the world. And
the US is just a small place in that world.. I plan on going to SE asia
or Russia to find my soul  mate once I am ready to settle down..

I'm 50 ...I figure another 5 years.

Being a lap dog for feminazi, skakified spoiled american females is a
waste of time and akin to self flogging. Have you been trained by your
mom or sisters to hate yourself and your maleness??

Your on line talking to a bitch who is married and always on the
internet taking to men. Would you want your wife to be that way..? Why
are you encouraging behaviour you would not look or respect   in a
partner.??

I'm just sayin'...

Translation- 'I've been trained by society to determine my value based
on  what females  think of me.  I'm giving up on life because I don't
have a  female to valadate me. It  matters more what females think of me
than what I think of myself.I cannot find happiness in myself..'

I guess that's one approach, trying to get females to feel sorry for
you... How's that worked out for you so far..?

Quit judging your insides by other people's outsides. Do you know that
25 % of the population admits they have NO ONE  they can confide in??

Do you really believe all those cheerleaders are happily married? You
should thank your maker you don't have to support their shoe habit or
listen to them bitch (or snore)  everyday..

Wikked breathe's husband hates her so much  she has to come to this DB
to get someone to pay attention  to her... What do you think a female
who is on line as much as she is   looks like..? If you knew, you
probably wouldn't spill you guts to her.

Taking drugs as these females are suggesting is NOT  the answer.

Here's a little more. Interesting it replaced the Starlet, which was only
sold here for a few years, but has been on sale in at least Japan,
Australia and New Zealand since the early 70's. There were a lot of parts
available for it, and even a Factory turbo:

History
Mar 1999: All-new Yaris replaces Starlet.
Oct 1999: 1.3-litre engine introduced.
Jan 2000: High-roofed Yaris Verso estate joins line-up. Also uses 1.3 engine.
Mar 2001: ABS made standard on all models, and 1.5-litre T Sport introduced.
Feb 2002: 1.4 D-4D diesel arrives.
Mar 2003: Facelift with restyled nose. Old S, GS, GS, GLS and CDX trims
replaced by T3, T Spirit and T Sport variants.

Semi-new model - supplanted the Echo, I think - which supplanted the Tercel,
IIRC (although may've been yet another model in-between there someplace).
Not a hybrid, but a small car, & gets good mpg.

Decent very small car, Sarah.  When we bought our Prius, it actually came
down to these two as the final choice.  The Yaris was just to 'cardboardy'
for us by a mile.  We remain pleased with the choice.
