{OT}  DOD spokesman says Obama camp was reminded of political rules

I guess obama wanted to do a little photo op at the hospital in Germany,
but it's against DOD rules to bring the press and the campaign thugs
along.  So they passed.

ma_camp_was_reminded_of_political_rules.html>

"Chief Pentagon spokesman Geoff Morrell confirmed to Politico that
Department of Defense officials cautioned Barack Obama's campaign that
his planned visit to wounded American troops in Germany could not be
political in nature and that he would be barred from bringing along
campaign staff and reporters.   He also said that Cindy McCain recently
requested to visit sailors aboard the U.S.N.S. Comfort and was denied.

"Sen. Obama is welcome to visit Landstuhl or any military hospital in
his official capacity as a United States senator," Morrell said in a
brief interview.  "But there is a DOD policy which governs campaigning
and electioneering at military facilities that would have to be
respected if he were to visit. That distinction was relayed and made
clear to campaign, and they made a decision on their own based on that
guidance."

Morrell, in a subsequent interview, added that military officials told
Obama he could only visit the military facility with his Secret Service
detail and Senate staff.

"We made it clear to him that campaign staff and press would not be
permitted to accompany him," Morrell said of Obama.  "We relayed those
ground rules. They made a choice based upon the information we relayed
to them.  It was their choice. We had nothing to do with it."

Military personnel at Ramstein Air Force Base, where the senator was to
fly into, had already made arrangements to accomodate Obama's traveling
press pack and campaign staff while he visited the wounded troops,
Morrell said.

Obama's campaign tells a different story.

Obama adviser David Axelrod told the Chicago Sun-Times that the Pentagon
"viewed this as a campaign event, and therefore they said he should not
come."

In a briefing to Obama's traveling press corps, another adviser stopped
short of saying they were told to not come but also suggested that even
a visit by Obama alone may have been at issue.

Robert Gibbs said one of Obama's military advisers had been informed by
the Pentagon that the visit may be seen as a campaign stop.

"They cited a regulation," Gibbs said of their point of contact,
described as legislative affairs in the office of the secretary.

"We believed that based on the information we received that any
presence, even his own and only his own, would get into a back and forth
on whether his own presence was a campaign event," Gibbs said.

Gibbs also pointed out that that their plane had been cleared to land at
Ramstein and the Pentagon subsequently issued the reminder about
political activity at military posts.

Obama, who was not traveling with any Senate staffers, decided on the
flight Wednesday from Tel Aviv to Berlin not to visit the hospital.

Trying to make clear that this was not an attempt to undercut the
Democratic nominee, Morrell also noted that when McCain officials asked
the Pentagon for permission to let Cindy McCain visit the massive U.S.
hospital ship, the U.S.N.S. Comfort, the request was rejected.

"Had she gone with Sen. McCain, it would have been OK," Morrell said,
underlining the delineation between what are official and campaign
activities. "

DOD would have allowed him to go in and visit the troops inside, then come
outside and do his photo op in front of the hospital. Obama opted for
politics over the troops. He's gonna have a tough time with this one.

Yep, no doubt about it.

BTW, latest Gallup poll shows a 6 point bounce.  By the end of next week
we will see if it sticks.

Is that a bounce up or down?

I've heard two or three reports that the change is flat to lower. I've not
heard of any improvement for Obama. Frankly, the polling averages seem to
show the race to be too tight to really give a lead. Obama leads, but the
margins are greater than the lead. The greatest lead I've seen is last week
or the week before, one poll gave Obama 46 to McCain 41. The same poll today
is something like 42/43, respectively. That's a dead heat ...

It's not a runaway for obama that is for sure.  In my opinion obama is
NOT doing very well so far.  I think it was a gift that Rush Limbaugh
gave to McCain for helping to get obama on the ticket rather than
hillary.  She would have been much tougher to beat although not
impossible by any means.  McCain VP pick, Colin Powell, how does that
sound?

but but but but....how could I vote for him?

I'm pegged as a racist, right.

ROFLMAO

I'd vote for Colin in a heartbeat.  I don't agree with everything he
says, but he is a THINKER and has a BRAIN....unlike Barry

In the last few hours I have made a few gaffs towards a couple of ethnic
groups without one complaint.  Your two letter gaff, if I can call it
that has produced numerous complaints.  I only have to deduce, they
don't like the truth you are saying about their guy, obamma.

I like Colin Powell too and I don't agree with everything he says
either, but again, I don't agree with everybody on everything.  That is
my choice and I don't like others telling me what to like or dislike,
ever!!

Great deduction......arrived at by ignoring what people are actually saying
and letting that pea brain wander on its own.

I don't think Powell is viable. That is, he'd be good on the ticket, but I
don't think he'll take the job. He definitely has a head on his shoulders
and is particularly well qualified. His baggage is that he's associated
closely with Bush 41 and 43. Powell being close to 41 and 43 isn't a problem
for me, but the voters that are on the fence will tend to teeter toward
Obama if Powell is on the ticket with McCain, mostly because of 41 and 43
(and mostly 43 of those two).

There has been talk about Romney on the ticket. I think he would be good.
There is also talk of an obscure Governor that I don't know. He could be
good, but I suspect he'll not be attractive to anybody because he is a
relative unknown. He could be good, I just don't know who he is.

Yea, you probably right about Powell.  He's been around too much.
McCain needs somebody pure and untainted, like Jeb Bush, LOL

That should drive the lefties up the wall.

YOU BET YOUR ARSE HE WILL.....

This just shows he has no respect for the troops.

I guess maybe you got it wrong....again.
"The senator decided out of respect for these servicemen and women that it
would be inappropriate to make a stop to visit troops at a U.S. military
facility as part of a trip funded by the campaign."  -Senior Obama aide

No, you got it wrong truk.  You believe the bullshit obama tells you
because that's the bullshit you want to believe.  The DOD seen the
circus that obama and his campaign thugs created before, but this time
obama and his campaign thugs including the obama press corps, owned and
payed for BTW, told the whole bunch they would have to go by the rules
this time.

Well, DOD would not allow a hospital visit to turn into a campaign stop,
with the Press and all of the photogs clogging the hallways. Even if Obama
likes the troops, there is not much good press to come from a visit where
the press has to stay in the hotel.

I discount what Obama's press guy said, and prefer to stick with the DOD's
statement.

It seems the lack of a photo-op is the reason he did not go. If this is
true, he's going to be in trouble on this issue.

What do I know though, I think that they should have pulled the plane up to
the door at the Oakland airport to let the soldiers get off, then offload
the plane's cargo directly onto military trucks. Wait, Oakland's public
objection to everything military is not at all like Obama. I don't know what
I was thinking.

You don't believe anything that might have the slightest hint of going
against your favorite pick.

Sorry, but I stick with the DOD and their rules.  The GI's in the
hospital don't need to be placed in a political commercial for obama.
Obama made the choice.  He picked not to see the troops, they were
second in his decisions and his political ambitions came first.
