edspyhill01@yahoo.com - 29 Aug 2008 20:35 GMT Sarah Palin is under investigation for having her brother-in-law fired after he filed for divorce from her sister; Palin is anti-choice, anti- environment; known as "The Wolf Killer" for allowing wolves to be shot from the air; allowed a group to kill 2 adult wolves and 14 pups in their den; wants to allow killing bears from the air.
"Just a few moments ago the McCain crowd picked 44-year old Alaskan Governor Sarah Palin as his VP choice. This is the same governor who not only supports but encourages the extermination of Alaska's wolves. She also believes in the slaughter of bears, resists listing polar bears as endangered and does not support the science behind global warming. If that weren't enough she is an outspoken supporter of indicted criminal Ted Stevens and a lifelong member of the NRA. How very Republican she is!"
My sympathies, even if it is with a large dose of shadenfreuden.
SMS - 29 Aug 2008 20:44 GMT > Sarah Palin is under investigation for having her brother-in-law fired > after he filed for divorce from her sister; Palin is anti-choice, anti- [quoted text clipped - 10 lines] > indicted criminal Ted Stevens and a lifelong member of the NRA. How > very Republican she is!" McCain has now reassured the evangelical Christians and right-to-lifers that he's not going to go centrist on them. He needs them if he's going to have any chance at all. Those voters are crucial to McCain, just as they were crucial to W., and they're single-issue voters that don't care about anything else. The environment, the economy, Iraq, Iran, etc are non-issues to these voters. Scary, but true.
I often hear people at work, at the store, at my kid’s school, saying things like, “who the hell would actually vote for McCain, no one could be that stupid?” These people are generally people that aren’t totally self-absorbed or self-centered, almost all college educated, middle-class professionals, mostly working in the high technology and the medical fields, mostly Christian, but a few Buddhists, Jews, Hindus and Moslems. These people are totally out of touch with what goes on in the minds of uneducated people that never learned any critical thinking skills; people that listen (and believe) public figures like Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, etc, or that get all their “news” from Fox, the Washington Times, or the New York Post. Living in a place like Silicon Valley, they don’t realize just how many of these people there actually are in the U.S..
I explain to them that there are many people that will benefit from a McCain presidency, and many that have specific motives for voting for the Republican ticket. I put together a list of likely McCain voters:
-Defense contractor executives, and their employees and stockholders.
-Oil company executives, and their employees and stockholders.
-Anti-abortion single-issue voters that believe that McCain will appoint enough Supreme Court justices to overturn Roe V. Wade.
-Gun-rights single-issue voters that believe that Obama will take away their machine guns.
-Racist single-issue voters that just don't like blacks.
-High income single-issue voters concerned that incomes over $250K will be taxed more heavily.
-Hillary supporters that believe that Hillary can win in 2012 but don't want to wait until 2016.
-Individuals that will benefit financially if the country plunged into another depression, by continuing the current economic policies.
-Individuals that like foreign military expeditions that involve eliminating people that don't share the same religious beliefs as they do.
McCain's challenge is to find enough self-centered, single-issue voters in the toss-up states to win. His problem is that most voters that agree with him on one or more of those issues, are not single issue voters and look at the big picture. No one that is concerned about the overall economic health of the country, about the environment, about health care, about education, about veterans, about foreign policy, could possibly vote for McCain.

I would suggest that Sarah Palin with her 13+ years in public service, and 3-ish years as governor of Alaska, has more experience in just about everything when compared to Obama.

Sarah Palin has over 20 months on the job as Governor, where she actually has a budget to balance and departments to manage, unlike the Senate where nothing has to be managed or a budget has to balance.Indeed, Obama seldom even bothered to vote during his 143 days.

Deeb said Obama's running mate is "an inside the beltway old grey haired career politican who has lost at least two runs for the president."
Sounds like McCain to me. You didn't get it, but deeb did.

Umm, not to nitpick, but her "three-ish" years are in actuality .....20 months. and during that tme she was pregnant and then gave birth to the youngest of her five children. But you got me on one point - she has more experience making babies than Barack has. And I doubt that Barack has ever shot a moose.

Look at what you got with obama, an

Obama has "years less experience than Palin"??? Do you count being the mayor of a town of 6000 folks "experience"? His stupidity really shined through, didn't it? ;) (He *DID* say some really dumb things while stumping for his wife.)
And Barack would have to deal with the BOTH of them telling him what to do. I'm sure he has his own ideas on how he wants to run the government.

Everyone was startled by this choice, and they are trying to put a brave face on it for the public, while shaking their heads in disbelief in private.

You Dims seem to be pretty upset about it.
We are not.
It is a good call.

edspyhill01@yahoo.com - 30 Aug 2008 19:17 GMT Yesterday was John McCain's 72nd birthday. If elected, he'd be the oldest president ever inaugurated. And after months of slamming Barack Obama for "inexperience," here's who John McCain has chosen to be one heartbeat away from the presidency: a right-wing religious conservative with no foreign policy experience, who until recently was mayor of a town of 9,000 people.
Huh?
Who is Sarah Palin? Here's some basic background:
She was elected Alaska 's governor a little over a year and a half ago. Her previous office was mayor of Wasilla, a small town outside Anchorage. She has no foreign policy experience.1
Palin is strongly anti-choice, opposing abortion even in the case of rape or incest.2
She supported right-wing extremist Pat Buchanan for president in 2000. 3
Palin thinks creationism should be taught in public schools.4
She's doesn't think humans are the cause of climate change.5
She's solidly in line with John McCain's "Big Oil first" energy policy. She's pushed hard for more oil drilling and says renewables won't be ready for years. She also sued the Bush administration for listing polar bears as an endangered species—she was worried it would interfere with more oil drilling in Alaska.6 How closely did John McCain vet this choice? He met Sarah Palin once at a meeting. They spoke a second time, last Sunday, when he called her about being vice-president. Then he offered her the position.7 This is information the American people need to see. Please take a moment to forward this email to your friends and family.
We also asked Alaska MoveOn members what the rest of us should know about their governor. The response was striking. Here's a sample:
She is really just a mayor from a small town outside Anchorage who has been a governor for only 1.5 years, and has ZERO national and international experience. I shudder to think that she could be the person taking that 3AM call on the White House hotline, and the one who could potentially be charged with leading the US in the volatile international scene that exists today. —Rose M., Fairbanks, AK
She is VERY, VERY conservative, and far from perfect. She's a hunter and fisherwoman, but votes against the environment again and again. She ran on ethics reform, but is currently under investigation for several charges involving hiring and firing of state officials. She has NO experience beyond Alaska. —Christine B., Denali Park, AK
As an Alaskan and a feminist, I am beyond words at this announcement. Palin is not a feminist, and she is not the reformer she claims to be. —Karen L., Anchorage, AK
Alaskans, collectively, are just as stunned as the rest of the nation. She is doing well running our State, but is totally inexperienced on the national level, and very much unequipped to run the nation, if it came to that. She is as far right as one can get, which has already been communicated on the news. In our office of thirty employees (dems, republicans, and nonpartisans), not one person feels she is ready for the V.P. position.—Sherry C., Anchorage, AK
She's vehemently anti-choice and doesn't care about protecting our natural resources, even though she has worked as a fisherman. McCain chose her to pick up the Hillary voters, but Palin is no Hillary. — Marina L., Juneau, AK
I think she's far too inexperienced to be in this position. I'm all for a woman in the White House, but not one who hasn't done anything to deserve it. There are far many other women who have worked their way up and have much more experience that would have been better choices. This is a patronizing decision on John McCain's part- and insulting to females everywhere that he would assume he'll get our vote by putting "A Woman" in that position.—Jennifer M., Anchorage, AK
So Governor Palin is a staunch anti-choice religious conservative. She's a global warming denier who shares John McCain's commitment to Big Oil. And she's dramatically inexperienced.
In picking Sarah Palin, John McCain has made the religious right very happy. And he's made a very dangerous decision for our country.
In the next few days, many Americans will be wondering what McCain's vice-presidential choice means. Please pass this information along to your friends and family.
Thanks for all you do.

Palin was actually a very logical choice. The Hillary voters were not going to vote for McCain under any circumstances, while the religious right would turn against McCain if he selected a vp that was pro-choice, believed in evolution, etc.. It's disgusting how the religious right has hijacked the Republican party, but the Republican party has allowed itself to be hijacked. I saw Ben Stein on Larry King the other night, pimping for McCain. Stein's latest schtick is pimping for the horribly misnamed "Intelligent Design" people.
People choose their candidate based on who's at the top of the ticket. The vice-presidential candidate only comes into consideration as a reason _not_ to vote for someone, i.e. if he or she is exceptionally unqualified to be president, or if their positions are exceptionally abhorrent. Even then it's only a big concern if the presidential candidate might not finish their term due to poor health or old age,
In today's newspaper (San Jose Mercury) they had interviews with a lot of female voters. Nearly all of them said that the choice of Palin would not get them to vote for McCain, while one woman that was planning to vote for McCain said that the choice of Palin had made her change her mind and now she was voting for Obama.
But who knows. Maybe McCain can turn this thing around. Voters elected Bush twice, so anything is possible.

The race has been basically within margin of error and we're not even into Sept yet. Frankly I'm quite surprised that biden and his VP running mate have not taken on a 10 or more point lead by this time. --

Thank you SMS, for the wide-ranging and accurate assessment of these misguided and benighted voters. Every word of what you've said is true, though the cretins on the newsgroup will call you several kinds of a 'dim' fool. But you've nailed it, my friend!
The thing about the Republican voters and their handlers that I've never understood is their constant cry of "But the Dems will raise your taxes!!" Well, perhaps, and perhaps not. And if they DO, what amount of money will be added to the tax bill? $100, $300? More? With this shortsighted view, one wonders how the federal government is supposed to fund the restoration and improvements to our infrastructure? If any of the pinch-penny voters who voted against tax increases ever found themselves on a bridge that was in the process of collapsing, or on a train whose rails parted and they found themselves scraping along the roadbed on their side, or in an airliner which had lost contact with flight controllers, they'd sing another tune, and quickly. And if we don't have some tax increases, how will the American treasury ever pay off the Chinese for funding Bush's war(s)? If you want to repaint and repair your house because it's getting shabby and may fall into the ground, do you crab about the cost of lumber, paint and nails? No, you suck it up and pay it.
