I realized this afternoon that the bass player was probably Jaco...

No WAY can I play like him!

I didn't think it was from before he died.

Once I thought about it I realized who it was.

The man was a master.

Oh, yeah! Probably one of the reasons I play as well as I do is because I
was always trying to learn Who songs...and Jefferson Airplane, too. Jack
Cassidy was also one of my heros. John Lodge was a big influence, too.

Flea (RHCP) is one of the current masters.

I like the Fiber camera on the end of the headstock.

Probably the most perfect blues & swing bassist on the planet. You'll learn
plenty from him.

Few can play like him, I have a friend that plays all Jaco stuff , but
his brain cant jam it and make it work in real life. Hey he said learn
the song, and thats easy, just leave out Jacos jammin on it just
follow the structure

That's what I do when I run into a particularly difficult bass line. Kind
of like "Limp Mode" when your ECU craps out!  ;)

Never dumb down a song. Either learn it, or put it away for a month and let
your brain work it out when you're sleeping or doing things other than
playing.

Just an FYI:  Your Castro YouTube link caused me to spend money on iTunes:

Can't Keep a Good Man Down,  Had Enough,  Nasty Habits,  Sho' Enough,
Don't Turn Your Heater Down

You should hear his version of James Brown's "Sex Machine". Hot damn.

When you're at an open mic...

Nope.

Whaddya do, not play?

Can't get away with that when you're the bass player.
Have to make something up that sound close enough.

I used to be like that, too, and then I realized that 3/4 of the people
are drunk off their a.ses and won't even notice.

Well, there's the problem. Here, the open jam is run by a guy who is very
good at welcoming guest players OFF the stage. He rarely does it with
players who are in over their heads for lack of skill. But drunks...."see ya
bye thanks for coming".

Maybe the key words are "run by". Some jams aren't run by anyone. They're a
cluster phuque.

But...but...I was the *HOUSE* bass player! If there wasn't a more skilled
bassist around, I was it!

It's actually cool, since you learn a LOT. Also, I wasn't able to think on
my feet that well, but it's like being taught how to swim by being thrown
into the middle of the lake. And, since I am familiar with so many musical
styles, I would borrow licks from here and there to keep things rolling.

Yeah...true. And, as far as drunks, I was referring to the *audience* !
