I have a problem with my 97 Camry where I can't open the front doors
from the outside of the car. I can only open the doors from the
inside. Is it possible the outside handles on both doors are no longer
connected to whatever rods/linkages connect them to the latch
mechanism? The problem originally occurred on the passenger side door
but now how has 'spread' to the driver's side!

I had the same problem with my 97 Camry when my son tried to open the
door while I was unlocking it remotely. There is a pin attached to
linkage inside the door that broke. The pin was cheap, and fortunately
I was able to access the linkage without removing the entire inside
panel.
Start taking it apart and look inside. You should be able to find the
problem.

Most likely, one of the link rods has become disconnected or the connectors
for the rods has broken.
This happens a lot when someone tries to slim jim the car.
