Hi,
I have a 1990 Toyota Celica ST183C with a 5SGE engine. Engine start
and runs fine normally but when the ambient temperature drops to aroun
freezing the car refuses to start. No solenoid click or starte
motor/engine turn over. All dash board and headlights work ok, with n
dimming when key is turned. It all seems to point to the ingition switc
being at fault. If I put the battery on charge for half an hour or wai
until temperature increases the engine starts first time. I have had tw
new batteries, alernator and belt (tension ok). I am loathed to chang
the ingition lock as it seems to work perfectly at all other times
Please can anyone help

If you have a volt meter, check for power at the starter when you get the
no-start condition. If you have power at the starter, the ignition switch
is OK. Toyota ignition switches do not fail very often, but the starter
solenoid contacts do.
If you have power at the starter, the solenoid contacts may be worn. You
can replace the entire starter or remove the starter and replace the
solenoid contact.

Check that both ends of both battery cables have good clean contact.
Oxidation under the transmission end of the negative battery cable have
given this type of symptoms in many cases for Toyotas of around this age.
Do you have an alarm system that cuts the power to the solenoid when armed?

What is battery voltage when you try it, you said if you put a charger
on it works fine, it could be a short, bad ground, cables. It could be
the starter. Id check voltage, there is spray electronic contact
cleaner if you think its the switch, its flamable so disconnect the
battery and give it a few hours to dry out.
