Hachiroku ハチロク - 08 May 2009 04:33 GMT U.S. Senator Charles E. Schumer today wrote the International House of Pancakes (IHOP) CEO Julia Stewart urging her to offer New York State maple syrup at each New York restaurant location. Recently, the IHOP restaurant in Vermont started providing customers with the option to ask for Vermont maple syrup instead of the chain’s artificially-flavored syrup. Replicating this opportunity at New York IHOP locations would allow customers to enjoy real maple syrup from New York and it would provide a boost to the State’s maple tapping industry.

Schumer expressed an idea which would be good for his home state's maple syrup business.

Some capitalist Hachi is - Schumer asks IHOP to use (and BUY) NY state maple syrup. Geez what could be the economic reason for that request???? Smoke pours out of Hachi's ears.

Just what we all need. More fat and calories. What happened to Obama's healthful eating agenda?

You might think a Senator should be doing this, but that's because you think government should be bigger. I think government is too big already, and Schumer has enough on his plate already.

There are business owners who might never meet if not for someone acting as a conduit. Since you never have and never will run a business, you can't imagine how this works. I've seen it work since the late 1970s.

<JS> I don't want senators telling us what religion to practice, and your guy, Billy, is the one sticking things into orafices they don't belong in. Indeed, it is a liberal trait to stick things in orafices they don't belong in. When our guys get caught doing that sort of thing, they hang their head in shame and throw their worthless selves onto their own sword.
There is no reason the syrup people can't go to IHOP with a marketing deal to put their syrup on the tables. A US Senator does not need to be doing that.

That's why they form a trade group. The trade association goes out to the potential customer base to get products in the door.
Otherwise, they sell stuff at the swap meet on Saturday morning, and at the gift shoppe in town to the visiting tourists.
If they are so small as to not have the wherewithall to peddle their goods to IHOP, they probably can't produce enough to interest IHOP anyway. Schumer is wasting his time and energy.

I don't think the production is there, or could be anytime soon. It might be easier in Vermont, since they only have one restaurant there. NY is another story. 15+ locations just upstate, and I didn't check the NYC region. That's a lot of syrup.

Probably 7-15 times the cost of bulk 'pancake' syrup depending on how good the sugaring season was this year. Last year was not too good, so there's not a lot of 'stock'. This year was also below average. Which means they'll have to raise prices to cover the cost. This is called 'inflation'. Inflation during a recession is bad, Joe. Very bad.
Look it up. It's out there. Schumer's out there. You're out there.

NY is another story. 15+ locations just upstate, and I > didn't check the NYC region. That's a lot of syrup. No one suggested legislating that IHOP serve maple syrup, they are just suggesting that it would be a good idea to have it available. Much like the Florida orange growers encourage restaurants in the state to serve Florida orange juice, and California wine makers encourage restaurants to serve California wine.
IHOP could offer maple syrup as an extra-cost side item. The IHOP near me has a card on the table with a list of "side dishes" one of which is whipped cream. IHOP could certainly add maple syrup to the list and charge 50 cents for it. OTOH, selling maple syrup, may make customers ask just what is actually in the free syrup.
I went to he IHOP near me for the first time in April, after living here for nine years. My daughter's scouting Venture Crew wanted go there after an event, and not much is open around here after 10:00 p.m.. It was as awful as I imagined it would be. When I told he waitress that I had ordered a chocolate milk shake, not chocolate milk, she informed me that what I had received was a milk shake, but she did have it made over, this time with real ice cream (or as real as you can expect from IHOP).

They used to be filthy, sticky places when I first visited them in Long Island, in the 1960s. The one near my home in this city is spotless and well run. It's a franchise operation, with all the potential pitfalls common to franchises.

Amazingly, it's still there, probably the only business still in the downtown area that has survived that long. My aunt used to love that place. When it opened we were amused at the "Sandwiches Steaks" sign that they hung under their regular sign, trying to assure potential customers that they were not just a breakfast/pancake restaurant.
They outlasted Sambo's, Royal Castle, Howard Johnson's and a lot of other chains.

Those aren't government office holders. A manufacturer's lobbying group can lobby another company to use their products. It's called "Sales" or "Promotions". Look it up. It's out there.
It's another thing for a Congressman to write to the corporation, isn't it?
Oh. You're a Liberal Democrat. Sorry. You need government to do your things for you.

Do you think elected officials should drop all other issues until the Middle East and the economy are "fixed"?
SMS - 08 May 2009 17:03 GMT > Do you think elected officials should drop all other issues until the Middle > East and the economy are "fixed"? Exactly! Elected officials need to be able to deal with a multitude of issues, some of which are of more importance than others. Fortunately we now have a president that is able to multi-task, and look at the big picture, something we lacked for eight years. Similarly, congresspeople need to pay attention to a lot of different issues of varied significance.
Undoing the Bush mess will take time, not just legislation. There's plenty of time for elected officials to work on other issues while the recovery kicks in.
bogusmailmark@yahoo.com - 08 May 2009 17:09 GMT Gotta agree there, he is setting new benchmarks for screw-up velocity...

I believe he's set a new record.

Where do you get that idea?
Do you even realize yoiu are the cheering section for an idiot that has screwed up damn near everything he's been involved in, and now is making it his job to sell maple syrup? Your priorities for leadership are all screwed up.
